Abstract: A method and network are provided for a reconfigurable optical sensor network. The method includes configuring, by a controller, the reconfigurable optical sensor network, including one or more reconfigurable optical space switches, for a type of sensor data. The method also includes generating sensor data in the type of sensor data with one or more of a plurality of bidirectional sensors. The method additionally includes sending the sensor data to one or more optical star couplers. The method further includes forwarding the sensor data from one of the one or more optical star couplers to the one of one or more reconfigurable optical space switches.

Abstract: Systems and methods for optical data transport, including controlling data transport across an optical transmission medium by generating two-dimensional (2D) distribution matchers (DMs) based on probabilistic fold shaping (PFS) and arbitrary probabilistic shaping (APS). The 2D PFS-based DM is can encode any N-fold rotationally symmetrical Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) format by applying the 2D PFS-based DM only to symbols in one quadrant based on a target entropy. A fold index yield uniform distribution is determined, and is utilized to carry generated uniform distributed parity check bits across the optical transmission medium. The 2D APS-based DM can encode any arbitrary modulation formats by encoding uniform binary data to generate non-uniform target symbols, and generating a probability distribution for the target symbols by indirectly applying the 2D APS-based DM based on a target probability distribution and a detected code rate of generated FEC code.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure describe apparatus, methods and systems for monitoring the operational status of fire extinguishers through the utilization of optically sensed, color profile determinations of a pressure gauge positioned on the fire extinguisher as well as the utilization of vibrational, and location sensing devices. Advantageously, monitoring apparatus according to the present disclosure are networkable, and a number of their operational characteristics may be configured via the network and associated servers. Furthermore, monitoring apparatus according to the present disclosure may employ vibrational, acceleration, GPS, RFID, and ultrasonic sensors to detect movement, location, and obstructions. In sharp contrast to the prior art, apparatus, methods and systems according to the present disclosure operate with existing fire extinguishers and provide a convenient, cost effective, and highly functional upgrade path for deployed fire extinguishers.

Abstract: Methods and systems for embedding VI demands in a software-defined network include mapping virtual nodes over physical nodes in a network topology. An auxiliary graph including virtual links between physical nodes that have a residual capacity sufficient to meet a virtual infrastructure demand is constructed. Virtual links over physical links are mapped to maximize use of existing optical channels and to minimize switching of a virtual link between a wavelength division multiplexing layer and an IP layer. New optical channels with a maximum spectral efficiency are established. A set of potential solutions for embedding a set of virtual infrastructure demands is determined. A solution is selected from the set of potential solutions that maximizes a weighted average of spectrum needed to support the set of virtual infrastructure demands and a cost of provisioning the virtual infrastructure demands.

Abstract: Methods and systems for sensing conditions of a fiber include splitting a light signal into two branches. A first branch is converted to have a mode different from that of the second branch. Both branches are mode multiplexed into a single fiber. Abstract: A method to process applicable to coherent optical channels with either linear or nonlinear phase noise includes: splitting a received sequence of data into clusters of points according to a cumulative log-likelihood function from constellation obtained in a previous iteration; generating new constellation points by calculating a center of mass of the clusters of points; repeating until convergence or until a predetermined number of iterations has been reached to determine a signal constellation; and transmitting signals over the coherent optical channels with nonlinear phase noise using the disclosed signal constellation and LDPC-coded modulation concepts.

Abstract: A system for centralized automatic bias control for a plurality of modulators, including a coupler for coupling output of each of the plurality of modulators to generate a combined modulator output. A pilot insertion device inserts a pilot tone into each of the plurality of modulators such that a different pilot tone frequency is inserted for each of the plurality of modulators. A monitoring device iteratively monitoring power (Pt) of each inserted pilot tone over time to determine whether a current modulator bias is optimal for each of the plurality of modulators, and an adjuster device iteratively adjusts the modulator bias for each of the plurality of modulators for which the current modulator bias is determined to be sub-optimal until a threshold condition has been met.

Abstract: A wavelength division multiplexing system and method featuring a wavelength monitor that is configured to receive a portion of a combined signal of wavelength division multiplexing channels and determine the wavelengths of each channel or the guardband between each channel in the combined signal. The wavelength monitor determines if there is excess laser drift for each channel in the combined signal. If excess laser drift is determined, feedback is sent to the transmitter for the signal with excess laser drift and the signal is adjusted to produce a target wavelength. The wavelength monitor may utilize optical intradyning in order to monitor the wavelengths of each channel in the combined signal.
