For a suction roll, a stationary suction box may be guided outward through the drive mechanism to be coupled with a suction device. An external gear ring may be rigidly coupled to a driven or gear end of the roll to mesh with a driven pinion. The driven pinion may be driven via a drive shaft coupled to the driven pinion through a pair of enmeshed gears. The driven pinion and an end of the drive shaft coupled to the pinion may each include a self-adjusting bearing, each self-adjusting bearing being adjacently positioned and supported on a bearing journal. The self-adjusting bearing associated with the end of the drive shaft may exhibit radial play with respect to one of an inside diameter of the drive shaft or an outside diameter of the bearing journal, which may permit tilting of the pinion with respect to the bearing journal. Force transference may be improved by positioning the pair of enmeshed gears connecting the drive shaft and pinion between the adjacent self-adjusting bearings.

A roll press including at least two rolls forming a press nip for the treatment of a web of material. A press roll includes a very flexible roll shell which is rotatable around a stationary support. The roll shell is mounted by at least one support element on the support. The support element has a concave support surface which forms a wide press nip with the backing roll. This provides a roll press which, even in the case of a backing roll which is without sag control, defines a press nip which is very substantially uniform. This is achieved by having the outer circumference of the shell of the press roll change in dimension in the axial direction from the axial center of the roll towards the ends of the roll, i.e., the outer circumference may increase or decrease. The circumference of the backing roll may or may not correspondingly change in the axial direction.

A plurality of hydraulic elements in the support and arrayed along the length of the press shoe across the width of the web to urge the press shoe against the backing roll. The invention provides a roll for a papermaking machine, comprising at least one strip element which extends substantially in the axial direction of the roll and which is supported, substantially against radial forces, by a plurality of supporting elements. The supporting elements comprise adjusting means by means of which a predetermined profile of the bending curve of the strip element can be adjusted in response to a given outer load. When the roll is configured as a shoe press roll, then the strip element may also be directly coupled with the press shoe. It is possible in this way, in the case of shoe press rolls, to ensure safe development of a hydrodynamic lubricating wedge and, in the case of other rolls, to adjust a desired profile of the bending curve of the strip element, under a given outer load.

A cantileverable roll for use in a roll press, wherein the cantileverable roll cooperates with a backing roll. The cantileverable roll has a rotating surface and is either a solid rotatable roll body or a stationary roll body with a rotatable shell around it. A journal at each end of the cantileverable roll is supported in a respective bearing bracket. At one end of the roll, preferably the drive end, there is a non-rotating extension piece which extends out axially from the roll body and is fastened to the bearing bracket at that end. A tension bar or the like connects the extension piece to a stationary structural part and introduces force in the roll body which compensates for the weight of the roll when the other end of the roll is temporarily unsupported and the roll is cantilevered. The backing roll may also be cantilevered. The various techniques for supporting the one end of the roll by using the coupling element from the extension piece to the frame of the paper making machine are disclosed. The cantileverable roll and the roll press are particularly useful in a paper making machine.

An angularly adjustable drainage foil for paper machines. A facultatively two-part support structure extends across the machine width, and comprises a first beam and a backing shape mounted on it. A facultatively two-part cover strip extends across the machine width, and consists of an upper, wear-resistant foil strip and a support shape supporting the foil strip. A moving device effects a relative longitudinal motion of the cover strip and support structure. As the cover strip and support structure are moved relative to each other, the angle of incidence .alpha. between drainage surface 12b and the wire surface running over it is influenced. Provided between the underside of the cover strip and the top side of the support structure are compression means which force the claws of the cover strip on the respective backing surfaces of the support structure. The cover strip is so designed that it grips at least one-sidedly and claw-like the appropriately designed backing shape at least partly respectively engages it.

A press jacket is formed of an elastomeric jacket material having two layers of reinforcement threads, namely an inner layer and an outer layer, embedded in it. The inner layer is formed of longitudinal threads which upon operation of the press device extend parallel to the axis of rotation of the press jacket. The outer layer is formed by a fabric layer or by circumferential threads which are wound helically and which, upon operation of the press device, extend approximately in the direction of travel of the press jacket. The reinforcement threads are surrounded by the layer of elastomeric material, which is produced homogeneously. The inner surface of the press jacket has longitudinal grooves which extend parallel to the longitudinal threads and have a depth of 0.1 to 0.2 mm. Various techniques of forming those grooves are described, including enlarging the longitudinal threads, pressing on the jacket which thereby deforms around the threads, forming voids or channels (i.e. cavities) in the jacket rather than having threads therein or having the press jacket material deform around the threads due to application of heat or pressure to the press jacket.

A wet portion of a paper machine, including a wire section and a pressing section has a plurality of roll presses. Each roll press includes two rolls defining a press nip. A water impervious belt having a smooth, non-porous surface is disposed in a continuous loop about at least two roll press rolls disposed consecutively with respect to a direction of conveyance of a paper web through the machine. Each press roll is associated with at least one counter roll or one shoe roll defining first and second press nips of the pressing section. The belt deflects about 180.degree. about each of the press rolls.
