    摘要: An anhydrous inorganic gel-polymer electrolyte is prepared using a non-aqueous sol-gel process. The inorganic gel-polymer is prepared by reacting a metal halide (SiCl4) and an alcohol (tert-butyl alcohol) in a diluent solution containing a lithium salt (lithium bisperfluoroethanesulfonimide) and at least one carbonate. The resulting porous silicon oxide network encapsulates the liquid electrolyte. The gel polymer electrolyte can serve as both a separator and an electrolyte in a Li-ion cell. The material is stable and has demonstrated minimal flammability. Lithium-ion electrochemical cells made with the inorganic gel-polymer electrolyte function similarly to Li-ion cells made with a liquid electrolyte. The cells have low capacity fade, 0.69%, and low irreversible capacity, 7.6%.

    摘要: A bulk ionically conductive polymer gel is prepared by dissolving a salt such as lithium trifluoromethanesulphonate (which would provide lithium ion conductors) in an organic compound such as N-formylpiperidine. The organic compound dissolves the salt at 20.degree. C. but is not a solvent at 20.degree. C. (though it is at 215.degree. C.) for polyethylene terephthalate. The last-named is a crystallizable polymer which is added in a minor amount at a high temperature to the other components and provides the required mechanical rigidity for the product at lower temperatures.

    摘要: Low mercury or mercury free primary or secondary alkaline manganese dioxide-zinc cell that comprises a manganese dioxide cathode with a manganese dioxide active material and a conductive powder. The active material and powder are uniformly mixed and pressed to form a porous cathode body. The cell further comprises a gelled zinc anode, a separator between the cathode and the anode, and an alkaline electrolyte. The anode gel comprises a modified starch as a gelling agent capable of releasing hydrogen gases developed during slow corrosion of zinc in the anode.A hydrogen recombination system can be used in the cell to limit inside pressure within permitted limits by recombining the evolved hydrogen.

    摘要: Surface rich forms of magnesium hydroxide and/or basic magnesium salts, or titanium (IV) oxide, preferably with lye or an aqueous potassium carbonate solution in weight ratios of between about 1:0.5 and 1:2, or between about 1:1.5 and 1:4.5, respectively, produce pastes of a consistency ranging from nearly dry to wet. These pastes are used in producing alkaline primary and secondary elements with immobilized electrolytes and high operating capacities. The specific surfaces of the solids are preferably in the range of from 25 to 50 m.sup.2 /g (and higher). The paste electrlytes can be utilized in the temperature range of from -50.degree. C. to near the boiling point of the pure electrolyte, while exhibiting capacities which scarcely differ from those of an additive-free KOH electrolyte.

Said solid electrolyte sheets are superior in ion-conductivity, processability, productivity, storage stability and flexibility and are suitable for use in thin and large electrochemical elements.

    摘要: An electrochemical cell having an anode, a cathode and an aqueous alkaline electrolyte solution. The anode is an intimate gelled mixture of a powdered metal, an aqueous electrolyte solution and an agent capable of gelling the mixture. The agent is a material capable of absorbing water and having a carbohydrate backbone which has a water soluble side chain grafted thereon. A preferred agent is a water insoluble salt of an aqueous alkali saponified gelatinized starch having a water soluble side chain grafted thereon. The gelling of the intimate mixture of the powdered metal anode and electrolyte solution with the agent is a method of improving the discharge characteristics of the cell.
