An approximately 1 to 6 wt. % solution manufactured from polyethylene with a molecular weight M.sub.w of at least one million and a solvent is extruded into a spinning duct at an extrusion temperature T.sub.E =180.degree. to 250.degree. C. at an extrusion rate V.sub.E =5 to 150 m/min. The duct is kept at a temperature of 100.degree. to 250.degree. C. by means of a heating device below the jet outlet area. The fibers are drawn off at a rate V.sub.w of at least 500 m/min, preferably 1500 to 4000 m/min, and freed of the solvent without further stretching. The fibers obtained are especially well suited for manufacturing industrial yarns, protective clothing, bulletproof vests, ropes, and parachutes. In the form of staple fibers, they are suitable for reinforcing various plastics.

Stretched articles of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene are prepared by melt-kneading a mixture of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene with an aliphatic compound (b.sub.1) of at least 8 carbon atoms having a melting point of at least 10.degree. C. and a boiling point of at least 130.degree. C. in a screw extruder while maintaining the mixture at a temperature from the melting point of the mixture to 300.degree. C. The molten mixture is melt-extruded through a die at a temperature from the melting point of the mixture to 300.degree. C. and the resulting unstretched extrudate is cooled to solidify it. The unstretched solidified extrudate is then subjected to a stretching treatment at a temperature of the melting point of the aliphatic compound (b.sub.1) to a point 20.degree. C. above the melting point of the mixture at a particular stretch ratio.

A stabilized synthetic polyolefin pulp-cellulose blend is prepared by adding 0.1-1.0% by weight of an antioxidant (a hindered phenolic and/or phosphite antioxidant) to a solution of a polyolefin and solvent wherein the antioxidant is homogenously dispersed therein, forming the polyolefin into a polyolefin pulp, and then mixing the polyolefin pulp with from about 55 to about 90% by weight of a wood pulp to produce the blend. This blend with improved higher ignition temperature is used in the absorbent products industry as an absorbent core, when the blend is heated sufficiently to melt the polyolefin.

An orientated polyolefin composition comprising an olefin (co)polymer having a weight average molecular weight (Mw) from 30,000 to 1,000,000 and a high molecular weight tail extending to molelcular weights above 1,000,000, and has a microstructure which is substantially parallel chain extended cores of the component polymer(s) and associated lamellar overgrowths extending in planes normal to the cores in which the lamellar overgrowths on adjacent cores intermesh and are capable of sustaining a haul off tension of at least 10 MPa without breaking during its extrusion, is produced by extruding an olefin copolymer through a die under a pressure of about 5-10 MPa, at a temperature above the self-blocking temperature thereof and by hauling off the extrudate at a tension of at least 10 MPa without breaking. The extrudates so produced have a high modulus.

A process for producing a drawn product of a crystalline polymer having tenacity and high modulus, which comprises compressing a gel-like material prepared from a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solvent (i.e. a gel-like sheet material (A) consisting of gel-like particles of a crystalline polymer and a solvent which is prepared by cooling a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solvent, or a gel-like film material (B) which is prepared by casting a solution of a crystalline polymer in a solvent) at a temperature lower than the temperature at which the gel-like material is dissolved, whereby removing a part of the solvent contained in the gel-like material, and drawing the compressed material, preferably using a drawing die. The drawn product is particularly useful as a tension member for optical fiber cable.

Reinforcing fibers of plastic having a surface tension of from 40 dyn/cm to about the surface tension of water are disclosed. The fibers can be easily and uniformly disposed in matrices. For organic matrices, a surface tension of 40-50 dyn/cm is effective. For cement matrices, a surface tension about 70-75 dyn/cm is effective. The high surface tensions are obtained by a corona treatment and subsequent application of a hydrophilic avivage. Corona treatment may be performed on the fibers, or on films from which the fibers are made.
