In a data communication apparatus for encoding information data by using a predetermined encoding method, encoded information data is transmitted isochronously with a predetermined communication cycle when the encoding method corresponds to a decoding method at an object node apparatus and non-encoded information data is transmitted asynchronously with the communication cycle when the encoding method does not correspond to the decoding method at the object node apparatus. It is therefore possible to perform an encoding process for the information data to be transmitted, in accordance with a decoding performance at the object node apparatus, to improve a communication efficiency, and to reduce a capacity of a memory used for communications.

A run length codeword system which has a set of codewords, each codeword being one byte. The first codeword of a run is divided into a 4-bit code part and 4 bits of printing hints. The code part specifies the source of the data, and the format of the remaining bytes in the run. The remaining one or two codewords specify the number of remaining data bytes in the run, or color values.

Systems and methods for compressing portions of a digital image, transmitting the compressed portions over a network, receiving them, decompressing them, and progressively displaying an image representing the original image. An encoder selects an interlaced portion of the original image based on a resolution factor and compresses each line of that portion by selecting the most efficient of multiple compression methods, including Group 3 and modified Group 4 coding schemes. Compressed portions of the original image are transmitted in successive stages, decompressed, and interlaced with the previously transmitted portions of the image, resulting in progressive enhancement of the transmitted, displayed image.

In an image reading apparatus, a film scanner shortens the time required for transferring image data by transferring image data that is compressed in the JPEG format to a computer in response to a request from the computer. On the computer side, the time required for recording image data in the hard disk drive can be shortened and an ensuing process can be simplified so that the time required for capturing and processing image data can be shortened.

In an image processing system, a color or monochrome image region in an image is discriminated, and communication charges are displayed, as required when regions of the image are encoded by appropriate encoding methods in units of the regions, and are transmitted to a designated destination. An operator switches an encoding method with reference to the displayed information, thereby determining appropriate encoding methods in units of displayed regions. Therefore, a transmission that sufficiently reflects the operator's intention is achieved.

An image processing/communication system provided with a processing unit for performing a coding processing on image data, a plurality of line memories for storing image data related to the coding processing and coding data, an external-bus connection control unit for controlling a connection between the external bus and the system, an internal bus for transferring data to the processing unit, the external-bus connection control unit and the plurality of line memories, and an operation control unit for causing the processing unit, the plurality of line memories and the external-bus connection control unit to simultaneously perform an input operation of inputting image data from the external bus to the line memory and an output operation of outputting coding data to the external bus from the processing unit or the line memory in parallel with one another. Thus, in each operation of this system, a coding processing can be effected by using the line memory. Therefore, an access to an external bus, which is necessary in the conventional system, becomes unnecessary. Moreover, a coding operation, a data input operation of inputting data from and a data output operation of outputting data to the external bus can be performed in parallel with one another. Thus, a coding operation can be performed extremely quickly.

An image communication system wherein transmission of an image between an image transmission apparatus and an image reception apparatus which include image output sections having different performances can be performed without making an inquiry for the performance prior to transmission is disclosed. An image is inputted by an image input section and sent to a hierarchization section in the image transmission apparatus. The hierarchization section converts the inputted image into and transmits hierarchized data to a selection section of the image reception apparatus. The selection section extracts only necessary ones of the data transmitted thereto in accordance with the performance of an image output section of the image reception section and then sends the necessary data to the image output section after, if necessary, they are converted into image data. The image output section visualize the image data transmitted thereto from the selection section.
