Abstract:
Caspase activity and apoptosis are promoted using active, dimeric Smac peptide mimetics of the general formula M1-L-M2, wherein moieties M1 and M2 are monomeric Smac mimetics and L is a covalent linker. Target cancerous or inflammatory cells are contacted with an effective amount of an active, dimeric Smac mimetic, and a resultant increase in apoptosis of the target cells is detected. The contacting step may be effected by administering to a pharmaceutical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of The compoundic mimetic, wherein the individual may be subject to concurrent or antecedent radiation or chemotherapy for treatment of a neoproliferative pathology.
Abstract:
An acoustic-magneto (AM) anti-theft marker is formed with the bias piece made from a soft magnetic material, instead of a “semi-hard” magnetic material that has been used in conventional anti-theft AM security markers. The method of manufacturing such soft magnetic bias pieces includes cold deforming a soft magnetic material with at least an eighty percent reduction rate, while keeping its DC coercivity below 12.5 Oe. The strip or wire of soft magnetic material is then cut to size as required for the bias piece. The anti-theft AM security marker has the soft magnetic bias piece placed inside or outside of the resonating cavity of the housing for the security tag with the resonator pieces inside the resonating cavity with a cover film placed over the housing. The soft magnetic bias piece or pieces effectively operate close to resonator piece or pieces with or without a non-magnetic separating film.
Abstract:
An optically addressed, photoconductive spatial light modulator (SLM) operates in a transmissive mode and is capable of modulating a wide spectrum of visible light. There is no pixel structure or native pixel resolution in the SLM. The SLM has no photodiodes and does not rectify. A light projection system (100) in which one or more SLMs (128, 130, 132) are placed includes a write (image definition) UV light path (102) and a read (illumination) visible light path (104) to form a color image projection display. The write UV light propagates from an image display pattern source (120) and either sequentially or continuously writes image patterns on the photoconductive SLMs. The read visible light propagates through the SLM and is modulated by an electro-optical material, the optical properties of which change in response to the image structure carried by the write light. The result is a high efficiency display system that delivers high resolution color images through a projection lens (190) onto a display screen.
Abstract:
An apparatus and process are presented that provide for the separation of hydrogen peroxide from a solution having an acid and hydrogen peroxide.
Abstract:
A process using supercritical water to upgrade a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock into an upgraded hydrocarbon product or syncrude with highly desirable properties (low sulfur content, low metals content, lower density (higher API), lower viscosity, lower residuum content, etc.) is disclosed. The process does not require external supply of hydrogen nor does it use externally supplied catalysts.
Abstract:
A reactor for conducting a process using supercritical water to upgrade a heavy hydrocarbon feedstock into an upgraded hydrocarbon product or syncrude with highly desirable properties (low sulfur content, low metals content, lower density (higher API), lower viscosity, lower residuum content, etc.) is described. The reactor is operable under continuous) semi-continuous or batch mode and is equipped with means to enable momentum, heat and mass transfer in and out of and within the reactor.

A device is disclosed for cooling motors that generate heat during operation. The device is more specifically directed to handheld power tools where long operation can lead to overheating of the handheld tool.
Abstract:
A polymer assisted solution process for deposition of semiconductive thin films is presented. The process can be organic solvent-free. The process includes solutions of necessary metal precursors and soluble polymers. After a coating operation, the resultant coating is fired at high temperatures to yield optical quality metal oxide thin films that can be converted to semiconductive thin films.
Abstract:
A method for providing a hole into a valve component having an internal cavity (55), said method comprising the steps of filling and sealing a fluid (59) within said cavity; and laser drilling the hole through the component into the internal cavity. Said method is particularly advantageous for providing a side port into a valve stem (54). The present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a valve stem, said method comprising the steps of: a) providing a valve stem work-piece having a passageway with an outlet (57); b) filling the passageway with a fluid; c) sealing the outlet; d) laser drilling a side port through the work-piece into the passageway; and e) unsealing the outlet.
