Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described in which a number of reference signal processes may be configured for a number of slots in a radio frame, and a corresponding reference signal process for each slot may be based at least in part on a location of the slot within the radio frame and a number of configured reference signal processes. An indication may be provided to a user equipment (UE) in each slot that indicates a presence or absence of a reference signal transmission in the slot.

Abstract: Techniques are described for wireless communication. In one method, a user equipment (UE) receives a timing synchronization signal (TSS) and a physical broadcast channel (PBCH), with the TSS based at least in part on a timing of the TSS within a broadcast channel transmission time interval (BCH TTI); determines the timing of the TSS within the BCH TTI; and demodulates the PBCH based at least in part on the TSS. In another method, a base station allocates resources for a TSS and a PBCH within a BCH TTI; determines the TSS based at least in part on a timing of the TSS within the BCH TTI; and transmits, on the resources allocated for the TSS and the PBCH, the TSS and the PBCH, with the TSS transmitted as a demodulation reference signal (DMRS) for the PBCH on at least one port used to transmit the TSS and the PBCH.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. Beams used for synchronization signals may be associated with beams used for reference signals. For example, a base station may identify a first set of millimeter wave (mmW) communication beams to transmit a synchronization signal. The base station may transmit the synchronization signal and identify a second set of mmW communication beams to transmit a reference signal, where the second set of mmW communication beams may be associated with the first set of beams. For instance, the first set and second set of mmW communication beams may be the same or similar. The base station may then transmit the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams. A user equipment may in turn identify the first and second sets of beams as being associated, and receive the reference signal on the second set of mmW communication beams.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described that provide for selecting different uplink transmission parameters for transmission or retransmission of a random access message. A user equipment (UE) may retransmit a random access message to a base station during a random access procedure if an initial transmission of the random access message was unsuccessfully received by the base station. The UE may select a different transmission beam, uplink resource, or transmission power for retransmission of the random access message. The selection may be based on path loss associated with synchronization signals or previous transmissions. The selection may also be based on a maximum number of retransmissions.

Abstract: Techniques are described for backhaul operations in a millimeter wave wireless communication system. A first base station of the millimeter wave wireless communication system identifies an access demand and one or more access communication parameters associated with the first base station. The first base station sends information to a second base station indicative of the access demand and the one or more access communication parameters, and determines one or more backhaul communication parameters associated with the second base station of the millimeter wave wireless communication system. The first base station establishes a wireless backhaul link with the second base station via the millimeter wave wireless communication system. The first base station partitions resources between an access link with one or more user equipments and the established wireless backhaul link based at least in part on the access demand, the one or more access communication parameters, or the backhaul communication parameters.

Abstract: The use of a radio access technology (RAT) may enable wireless communication using one or more node functions at a wireless node, such as a base station or access node. Additionally, multiple wireless nodes may communicate in a network using a schedule that is aligned with a frame structure. For example, a wireless node may establish a link with different wireless nodes using a RAT that supports a synchronized frame structure, such as a millimeter wave (mmW) RAT. The wireless nodes may instantiate one or more node functions, such as an access node function (ANF) and a user equipment function (UEF). The wireless nodes may then communicate according to active and suspended modes using the node functions, where the communication is based on a schedule aligned with the frame structure.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are described for wireless communication at a user equipment (UE). A wireless communications system may improve UE discovery latency by dynamically selecting and switching beam forming codebooks at the millimeter wave base station and the wireless device. Selecting an optimal beam forming codebook may allow the wireless communication system to improve link margins between the base station without compromising resources. In some examples, a wireless device may determine whether the received signals from the millimeter wave base station satisfy established signal to noise (SNR) thresholds, and select an optimal beam codebook to establish communication. Additionally or alternately, the wireless device may further signal the selected beam codebook to the millimeter wave base station and direct the millimeter wave base station to adjust its codebook based on the selection.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices for wireless communication are described. A base station may transmit a phase noise correction reference signal (PC-RS) and a channel state information reference signal (CSI-RS) during a symbol period of a subframe. A user equipment (UE) may identify a first channel information using the PC-RS and the CSI-RS. The UE may transmit a channel information message to the base station that includes the first channel information. The first channel information may include a phase noise corrected channel measurement. The UE may the CSI-RS during the symbol period. Channel and phase noise estimates may be generated using a joint estimation based on the CSI-RS. The CSI-RS may be repeated periodically. In some cases, the UE may additionally or alternatively receive pilot tones that may include PC-RSs. The joint estimation may be further based on the pilot tones.

Abstract: A wireless device configured for discontinuous reception (DRX) may and operating in a system that uses directional beamforming may identify a random access time period after awaking from a DRX sleep mode. The device may then transmit a scheduling request during the random access time period. In some cases, the device may transmit the scheduling request using frequency resources also associated with random access transmissions. In other cases, the device may utilize resources that are not associated with random access. The determination of which frequency resources are used may depend on the length of the DRX. That is, if a device has been in a sleep mode for a long time, it may use random access frequency resources that are associated with a more robust transmission configuration.
