摘要: Dilators and sheaths for use in minimally invasive vascular therapy are disclosed. In some embodiments, the dilators include a slot that accesses a guidewire lumen within the dilator. These slots facilitate rapid exchange of one dilator for another. In another embodiment, a dilator is sufficiently stiff to facilitate entry, but also designed to facilitate placement of the dilator along a tortuous path.

摘要: An implantable neurostimulator system for treating movement disorders includes a sensor, a detection subsystem capable of identifying episodes of a movement disorder by analyzing a signal received from the sensor, and a therapy subsystem capable of supplying therapeutic electrical stimulation to treat the movement disorder. The system treats movement disorders by detecting physiological conditions characteristic of an episode of symptoms of the movement disorder and selectively initiating therapy when such conditions are detected.

摘要: Disclosed is any implanted medical device (an IMD) that has either a primary or a rechargeable battery that has a case that forms part of the case of the implant. Furthermore, the case of the battery is typically welded to a second metal can that would generally enclose the electronic components of the implant. This construction provides the thinnest case so as to be surgically placed under the skin of the chest with the least bulging. Also disclosed is the concept of coating the IMD and any electrical lead that comes out of the IMD with an antibiotic and/or anti-inflammatory coating so as to minimize any post-implant infection or inflammation.

摘要: Disclosed are a means and a method for the placement of insulated electrical wires beneath the human scalp in such a way that they will experience no flexing after implantation thus disallowing wire breakage. Specifically, this intracranial system uses wires to connect a control module containing various electronic systems to brain electrodes. These wires are placed in grooves that are made by a surgeon in an outer portion of the patient's cranium by means of a specially shaped burr rotated at high speed by means of a router. At the end of the groove, the surgeon would drill a burr hole in the cranium at the site where a brain electrode is to be placed. A distal portion of each electrical wire would be in the form of a helical coil; one helical coil would be placed in each burr hole. The grooves and burr holes could be filled with an adhesive filler type of material to form a smooth outer surface for the cranium. Also, a special cap could be placed over the burr hole. The function of the cap would be to form a smooth outer surface for the cranium. The electrodes at the end of the wires could be placed at various locations such as deep into the brain, on the brain surface, or in close proximity to the brain.

摘要: An implantable programmable infusion pump (IPIP) is disclosed and generally includes: a fluid reservoir filled with selected medication; a pump for causing a precise volumetric dosage of medication to be withdrawn from the reservoir and delivered to the appropriate site within the body; and, a control means for actuating the pump in a safe and programmable manner. The control means includes a microprocessor, a permanent memory containing a series of fixed software instructions, and a memory for storing prescription schedules, dosage limits and other data. The microprocessor actuates the pump in accordance with programmable prescription parameters and dosage limits stored in the memory. A communication link allows the control means to be remotely programmed. The control means incorporates a running integral dosage limit and other safety features which prevent an inadvertent or intentional medication overdose. The control means also monitors the pump and fluid handling system and provides an alert if any improper or potentially unsafe operation is detected.

摘要: The penile erection device with valving in penis of the present invention includes a simple, safe, reliable, easy to operate and inconspicious implantable device wherein the impotent male achieves a penile erection that is physiological normal. The erect state is achieved rapidly by pushing the penis upward against the abdomen thereby opening a valve located within a stiffener cylinder inside the corpus cavernosum without requiring pumping or manual squeezing of the reservoir containing the fluid that is to be displaced into the pendulous portion of the penile stiffener cylinder. The flaccid penile state is achieved rapidly by pushing the penis upward against the abdomen thereby opening the valve while simultaneously squeezing the penis.

摘要: A medication infusion system provides redundant safety and includes condition detecting and informational alarm signal generating apparatus for indicating if (1) a fluid leak occurs in different portions of the system; (2) a programmable input from a patient or physician would result in exceeding a safe dosage limit; (3) the reservoir containing medication has been filled; (4) the intended medication pumping does not correlate with the pumping actually effected; (5) battery voltage is low; (6) the medication reserve is low; and (7) the system has been switched off. The apparatus may provide subcutaneous electrical, thermal, or audible stimulation to the patient and also provides a signal which a physician may monitor. The stimulation may be coded to separately identify each above-listed deviation in nominal system performance. In addition, the number of medication requests are correlated with actual medication dispensing to assure proper operation. An identification scheme is provided which matches the patient with his or her corresponding medication.
