摘要: A surgical instrument for dissecting a vessel in a patient. The surgical instrument includes a spoon retractor having a proximal end and a distal end, said spoon retractor defining a working space in the tissue of a patient, a dissecting element proximate to the spoon retractor for dissecting tissue from a vessel, and a handle for manipulating the spoon retractor near the vessel. Also provided is a method for dissecting a vessel including the steps of providing the surgical instrument for dissecting a vessel in a patient described above. Making an incision in a patient. Inserting the spoon retractor into the incision. Creating a working space in the tissue of the patient near the vessel being dissected, and manipulating the dissecting element to further dissect tissue surrounding the vessel being dissected.

摘要: An electro-stimulation device includes a pair of electrodes for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The electro-stimulation device both electrically arrests the heartbeat and stimulates the heartbeat. A pair of electrodes are provided for connection to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat. The pair of electrodes may be connected to an intravenous catheter for transvenous stimulation of the appropriate nerve. A first switch is connected between a power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to augment any natural stimuli to the heart and thereby stop the heart from beating. A second switch is connected between the power supply and the electrodes for selectively supplying current from the power supply to the electrodes to provide an artificial stimulus to initiate heartbeating. In another aspect, the invention is directed to a method for arresting the beat of a heart in a living body comprising the steps of connecting the pair of electrodes to at least one location in the body that affects or regulates the heartbeat and supplying an electrical current to the electrodes of sufficient amplitude and duration to arrest the heartbeat. The device may also serve to still the lungs by input to a respirator or by stimulation of the phrenic nerve during surgical procedures.

摘要: An improved ophthalmic lens is disclosed which has a plurality of alternating power zones with a continuously varying power within each zone, as well as in transition from one zone to another. In other words, a plurality of concentric zones (at least two) are provided in which the variation from far to near vision correction is continuous, i.e., from near correction focal power to far correction focal power, then back to near, and again back to far, or vice versa. This change is continuous (progressive), without any abrupt correction changes, or “edges”. Two versions of the invention are disclosed. In the first version continuous, alternating power variation is accomplished by a continuously changing curvature of the lens posterior surface, thereby altering the angle of impact of light rays on the eye. In the second version continuous, alternating power variation is accomplished by creating non-homogeneous surface characteristics having refractive material indexes which continuously vary in the lens radial direction (out from the optical axis).

摘要: A percutaneous tissue removal apparatus having a flexible drill shaft, a cutting tip mounted on the shaft a power source for transmitting motion to the shaft to move the cutting tip against tissue and a suction source for removing tissue fragments along the shaft to a location outside the tissue mass while cutting. The apparatus may include a container for collecting one or more selected components of the harvested tissue fragments for implantation of the fragments preferably into the body of the patient from whom they were removed. Where the tissue to be cut is bone, a cutting tip is preferably made of a polymeric material which is softer than the cortical portion of the bone, although the cutting tip may be made of a ceramic or a composite material. A second flexible shaft may be provided either within or about the flexible drill shaft.

摘要: A tissue press for shaping or compressing a piece of tissue comprises first and second members movable relative to each other. A first forming element of a predetermined shape is selectively engageable on the first member. A second forming element of predetermined shape is selectively engageable on the second member. The first and second forming elements are positionable on opposite sides of the piece of tissue. The first and second members are relatively movable between a first spaced apart condition and a second condition in which the piece of tissue is held between the first and second forming elements. Means are preferably provided for monitoring and controlling the amount of pressure applied to the piece of tissue, in order to maintain the tissue in a viable living condition. Means may also be provided for draining off fluid from compressed tissue, so that the tissue can be implanted in a compressed state and imbibe fluid from the host site. A retainer, which may be expandable, can be used to maintain the tissue graft in a compressed condition.

摘要: Devices and methods for increasing the volume of blood pumped by a heart muscle are disclosed. A therapeutic catheter in accordance with the present invention may comprise an elongate shaft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a lumen extending through at least a portion thereof. The therapeutic catheter may further include a cutter having a cutter lumen fixed to the distal end of the elongate shaft, and a mooring shaft slidingly disposed within the lumen of the elongate shaft. A method in accordance with the present invention may include the steps of engaging a muscle of a donor site with a portion of the mooring shaft, penetrating the muscle of the donor site with the cutter to form a muscle tendril, withdrawing the muscle tendril from the muscle of the donee site, positioning the distal end of the therapeutic catheter proximate a pit defined by the tissue of a donee site, inserting the muscle tendril into the tissue of the donee site, and disengaging the mooring shaft from the muscle tendril.
