Abstract: 766,288. Filters. GEWISS, L. V. Nov. 10, 1954 [Nov. 28, 1953], No. 32593/54. Class 46. [Also in Group XXVIII] A strip of paper or fabric 1, Fig. 1, of breadth equal to the difference between the outer diameter of the intended cartridge and the diameter of the axial space and of length equal to that of the cartridge perimeter, is folded lengthwise and pleated, the breadth of the pleats being a submultiple of the length of the strip. The strip is then bent in its own plane with the open edges (now lying flat) on the outside and the folded edge, chevron-pleated, at the centre. The ends of the strip are then glued together. A number of identical elements are stacked, with pleats nesting, and adjacent free edges of adjacent elements are glued together. Flat circular covers of cardboard or metal are then secured over the unglued free edges of the lowermost and uppermost elements of the completed stack, one cover at least being provided with a central opening. Spaces 3, Fig. 4, between adjacent pleats enable filtrate to flow into the axial space. Instead of glue, axial pressure may be sufficient to seal the elements together, in which case the two edges of each element are kept apart by cardboard or paper shims cut at intervals to provide a passage for the liquid. The strip 1 may be coiled with its open edge inward. In Fig. 5 a strip of indefinite length is folded lengthwise, pleated, and helically coiled edgewise with the free edges outward. The strip is compressed during winding and adhesive or staples 6 are applied to secure in a continuous manner the lower free edge of any convolution to the upper free edge of the convolution below it. As before, the free edges may be on the inside instead of the outside of the completed cartridge. In Fig. 7, the strip after folding and pleating is wound upon itself so as to provide the first convolution with a number of pleats corresponding to the length of the perimeter of the cartridge and the free outer edge of each convolution is then glued to the free inner edge of the following convolution, the pleats being nested. Before the central turns are compressed to a tooconsiderable extent the winding is stopped. One axial end of the coil is then urged towards the axis, the other end thus expanding to form the periphery of the now disc-shaped element. A unit is thereafter obtained by superposing, a number of such elements endwise and securing them between covers. To produce the unit of Fig. 8 a sheet is first folded along a number of parallel lines parallel to the intended axis of the unit, to produce zig-zag pleats each having a breadth equal to the intended radial thickness (approximately) of the unit. The sheet is then further folded along lines perpendicular to the first ones to produce small transverse pleats 8. The pleated sheet is then shaped into hollow tubular form and the two terminal edges glued together lengthwise of the unit, the adjacent pleats nesting. Covers 9 and 10 then complete the cartridge as shown in Fig. 8. It is then compressed axially. In Fig. 5 the original strip may be folded longitudinally to provide four, six or more layers instead of the two shown. A perforated tube may be provided, in all cases, either inside the axial opening or over the outer periphery of the cartridge.

Abstract: 585,295. Filters. BRIGGS, S. W. Feb. 15, 1945, No. 3870. [Class 46] A filter element is in the form of a tubular body comprising an elongated web of cellulosic filter material folded to extend back and forth between the inner and outer peripheral surfaces, a tubular binding strip being secured to the inner folds which are in contact with each other. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a web 1 of cellulosic material folded back and forth with the inner folds joined together by means of a binding strip 13, is mounted on a foraminous tube 2 and secured between end plates 4,5 by plaster of Paris 14. The web is formed with horizontal grooves 16. Instead of a single web two or more webs may be used to form the filter element. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the stretches of the web are curved to be in contact with adjacent stretches and the material substantially fills the space between inner and outer foraminous tubes 21, 20. Strips of cellulosic material containing an absorbent such as bauxite may be inserted between stretches of the web. Perforations may be made at the folds of the web to facilitate filtration.

Abstract: A filter apparatus includes a filter, such as a cartridge, positioned within a housing. The filter apparatus has multiple ports and valves, so as to allow a user to easily switch between a filtration mode of filtering fluids and a maintenance mode of cleaning the filter. The filter can have a filter substrate in a housing and after filtrate builds up on the substrate, the substrate can be cleaned by directing a spray of fluid, such as from a ring of nozzles at the top of the housing, onto the substrate. A maintenance port can be provided to drain the debris washed from the substrate. The filter can switch between a backwash mode and a filtration mode.

Abstract: A cassette filter for cleaning a fluid includes: a frame; and a plurality of filter elements having a filter medium provided with a folding. The plurality of filter elements are accommodated in a frame such that at least two adjoining filter elements of the plurality of filter elements are arranged at an acute angle to one another and form a V-shaped arrangement. Each of the plurality of filter elements has folded edges which are formed by fold peaks and fold valleys and extend perpendicularly to legs of the acute angle. Each filter element of the plurality of filter elements is provided with foldings such that a height of the respective filter element is smaller at all edge regions than a height in a central region of the respective filter element, and smaller folding surfaces than the central region result at the edge regions.

Abstract: A filter arrangement for threadably securing to a filter head includes a housing having a surrounding wall defining an interior volume, an open mouth providing access to the interior volume and an end opposite of the open mouth. The surrounding wall has an exterior and an interior. A filter media construction is operably held within the interior volume. A sleeve, distinct from the housing, is secured to the exterior of the surrounding wall adjacent to the housing mouth and extending partially along the surrounding wall. The sleeve has an exterior and an interior. The exterior of the sleeve defines mounting threads constructed and arranged to removably mount with the filter head, when the filter arrangement is secured to the filter head. The interior of the sleeve is against the exterior of the surrounding wall. A first seal member is oriented against the sleeve to create a seal with a filter head, when the filter arrangement is secured to the filter head. A filter assembly includes a filter arrangement and a filter head. The filter arrangement is removably secured to the filter head by a threaded connection between the sleeve and the filter head. A system includes an engine utilizing a liquid and a filter assembly in fluid communication with the engine to filter the liquid. Methods of making filter arrangements include utilizing structures characterized above.

Abstract: Pleated filtration media, filtration media packs, and filtration elements containing projections are disclosed. The pleated filtration media includes projections on at least one surface, the projections configured to engage adjacent media sheets so as to reduce masking of the media. The pleated media and media pleat packs contain protrusions on the surface of the media. These protrusions are three dimensional structures that are on the surface of the media and are provided by forming the protrusion directly in the filtration media or applying structures, such as adhesive beads, or onto one or both faces of the media. Elongation of the adhesive bead can facilitate greater separation of the adjacent faces of pleated media if desired. These protrusions, also referred to herein as projections or dimples, can either contact each other or contact flat media and keep adjacent media faces from becoming in intimate contact with each other.
