Abstract:
A method of embossing an absorbent web with a machine direction undulatory structure is described. The web has a plurality of ridges extending in its machine direction occurring at a frequency, F, across the web and the method includes providing the web to an embossing station where the web is embossed between a first and second embossing roll, each of which rolls may be provided with a plurality of embossing elements configured to define a plurality of embossing nips. At least a portion of the embossing nips are substantially oriented in a cross-machine direction with respect to the web and have a cross direction length, L. The product FnullL is from about 0.1 to about 5.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a device for embossing and/or satin-finishing a flat material, comprising at least two embossing rolls that are linked with a drive and that can be driven individually or jointly. The rolls can be elastically pressed against each other and the pyramidal teeth of the rolls have a flattened tip. In order to produce an embossed structure with variable optical effects the teeth (T2) of at least one of the rolls are adapted to provide the flat material, especially the metallized packaging foil, with a sign (L) whose aspect varies depending on the visual angle of the viewer (O) and/or kind and/or location of the source of light (LS). These teeth (T2) have, for example, a height that is inferior to that of the remaining teeth (T1). The inventive device allows not only production of special effects by embossing but also production of security features that are especially forgery-proof.
Abstract:
Uncreped throughdried tissue sheets are mechanically treated by calendering and embossing to provide a unique combination of desirable properties to the resulting sheet, which exhibits more surface uniformity, improved softness, high bulk and absorbency.
Abstract:
A process for autogeneously bonding two cellulosic laminae to form a multi-lamina substrate by high pressure lamination. The attachment occurs at selective bond sites wetted with a functional fluid such as water prior to bonding. The process is applicable to multi-lamina substrates formed from laminae treated with chemical softening agents.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a process which in a preferred embodiment includes the steps of. (a) applying a hot melt adhesive to a heated roll rotating at an initial tangential speed; (b) milling the adhesive to a reduced thickness and accelerating said adhesive through a series of metering gaps between a plurality of adjacent heated glue rolls; (c) applying the adhesive to a conformable glue application roll rotating at a tangential line speed which is higher than the initial tangential speed; (d) applying the adhesive to a first patterned embossing roll which is engaged with a second patterned embossing roll having a complementary pattern to the first embossing roll, the embossing rolls being heated; (e) passing a web of sheet material between the first and second embossing rolls at the tangential line speed to simultaneously emboss the web and apply the adhesive to the web, such that the adhesive forms an adhesive pattern between embossments; (f) transferring the web from the second embossing roll to the first embossing roll; (g) stripping the web from the first embossing roll; and (h) cooling the web.
Abstract:
A method of forming a multi-ply web by embossing a first ply between a first pair of matched embossing rolls including a first embossing roll having protuberances formed in a substantially rigid outer surface and a second embossing roll having protuberances formed of a resilient material thereby forming raised portions and recessed portions in the first ply, embossing a second ply between a second pair of matched embossing rolls including a third roll having protuberances formed in an outer surface formed of a resilient material and a fourth roll having protuberances formed in a substantially rigid outer surface thereby forming raised portions and recessed portions in the second ply with the first and second pairs of matched embossing rolls being positioned such that the first embossing roll is positioned adjacent the third embossing roll forming a nip region between the respective protuberances formed in each roll. An first adhesive is then applied to the web carried by the third adhesive roll with the first ply and second ply being adhered to one another in the nip region wherein the raised portions of the first and second plies are adhered to one another and the recessed portions of the first and second plies are spaced from one another.
Abstract:
A paper toweling which provides a combination of strength, bulk and absorbency while presenting an attractive appearance. Included are a single ply paper towel having areas of light and heavy embossing perforations which form diamond shaped islands of heavy embossing perforations surrounded by intersecting bands of light bosses.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus are disclosed for embossing paper webs using opposing embossing and imprint rolls. In the preferred embodiment the embossing roll and the imprint roll have differing diametrical dimensions, thereby producing differing velocities through the nip, causing the embossing projections, of the embossing roll to sweep through modified imprint cells of the imprint roll, thereby affecting an automatic sweeping of accumulated debris from the imprint cell as the embossing operation take place.
Abstract:
An embossed paper laminate having two laminae is provided. The laminae are joined such that there is at least one zone of the laminate wherein the peel strength of the laminate in that zone is greater than the peel strength of the laminate in other zones of the laminated paper product. The laminate is made by two close tolerance pattern rolls juxtaposed to form a nip. Each pattern roll has radially extending protuberances which contact the periphery of the other pattern roll intermediate its protuberances. The laminae are fed through the nip in face-to-face relationship and are embossed and adhesively joined to the other lamina by the radially extending protuberances. The laminating adhesive is supplied to the various zones of the laminated paper product at a level that is appropriate for providing the requisite peel strength for that zone.
Abstract:
A method for embossing a sheet of creped paper composed of at least one ply, whereby the sheet is engaged between two metallic cylinders fitted with protrusions and driven in rotation in a conventional manner and mesh with each other while having a play e1 between the tops of the protrusions of one cylinder and the opposite surface of the other cylinder, and a play e2 between the slopes of two adjacent protrusions wherein e1 and e2 are determined in the direction transverse to the direction of paper advance in such a manner that the ratio of e1/e2 is between 0.8 and 1.
