Abstract:
Methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture for using location information to manage spillover in an audience monitoring system are disclosed. In particular, the example methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture detect spillover to generate media monitoring information. Initially, a first sensor located in a first location and a second sensor located in a second location receive a portable metering device signal. First location information is associated with receiving the portable metering device signal via the first sensor and second location information is associated with receiving the portable metering device signal via the second sensor. Media monitoring information is generated based on one of the first location information or the second location information.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to identify media content using temporal signal characteristics are disclosed. An example method to identify media content includes receiving a reference signal corresponding to known media content and generating a reference signature based on the reference signal. The method further includes generating a plurality of sums based on peaks in the media signal and identifying one or more signal peaks based on the generated sums. The method then generates a second signature based on a plurality of normalized curve features, wherein each normalized curve feature corresponds to a signal peak at the temporal location of the signal peak, and determining whether the media signal corresponds to the reference signal based a comparison of the reference signature and the second signature.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus to monitor reception of programs and content by broadcast receivers are disclosed. An example method disclosed herein to monitor reception of a broadcast program by a broadcast receiver located in a statistically selected site comprises retrieving an audience measurement data packet from the broadcast receiver in order to identify the broadcast program, detecting a code embedded in the broadcast program in order to identify the broadcast program, extracting a signature from the broadcast program in order to identify the broadcast program, identifying the broadcast program through use of a software agent, and selecting at least one of the audience measurement data packet, the embedded code, the extracted signature or the software agent to identify the received program.
Abstract:
Example methods, apparatus, and articles of manufacture to collect metering information associated with media presented media presentation devices are disclosed. A disclosed example system for collecting metering information includes a media meter to generate media monitoring information in response to media presented by a media presentation device. The example system also includes a peripheral memory device removably couplable by an audience member to the media meter to receive the media monitoring information.
Abstract:
A system for monitoring and recognizing audio broadcasts is described. The system includes a plurality of geographically distributed monitoring stations, each of the monitoring stations receiving unknown audio data from a plurality of audio broadcasts. A recognition system receives the unknown audio data from the plurality of monitoring stations and compares the unknown audio data against a database of signature files. The database of signature files, or index sets, corresponds to a library of known audio files, such that the recognition system is able to identify known audio files in the unknown audio stream as a result of the comparison. The system further includes a nervous system able to monitor and configure the plurality of monitoring stations and the recognition system, and a heuristics and reporting system able to analyze the results of the comparison performed by the recognition system and use metadata associated with each of the known audio files to generate a report of the contents of plurality of audio broadcasts.
Abstract:
Audience measurement systems having fixed and portable monitoring devices are provided. Embodiments of the audience measurement system may be suitable for monitoring programs viewed and/or listened to by one or more members of a sample household. The fixed monitoring device may be associated with a particular media device, for example, in the household's home and monitor a received broadcast signal and/or a state of the media device to extract information enabling a received program and/or station to be identified. The portable monitoring device may comprise a receiver for receiving sound of a program emitted by any nearby media device; a data extractor for extracting data from the received sound to enable a program and/or station to be identified. Either a first or a second communicator may be operable to transmit a device present signal in the vicinity of its respective monitoring device, and/or detect the said signal.
Abstract:
Methods and systems are provided for gathering research data. Frequency domain data is received or produced, a signature is extracted from the frequency domain data and an ancillary code is read from the frequency domain data.
Abstract:
A media work may be associated with an action by (a) extracting features from the media work, (b) determining an identification of the media work, based on the features extracted, using a sub-linear time search, such as an approximate nearest neighbor search for example, and (c) determining an action based on the identification of the media work determined. The media work may be an audio work. The features extracted from the work may include (A) a frequency decomposition of a signal of the audio work, (B) information samples of the audio work, (C) average intensities of sampled windows of the audio work, and/or (D) information from frequencies of the audio work.
Abstract:
The method and apparatus operates in a video recorder and playback unit to identify selected broadcast segments, such as commercial advertisements, of a television signal in real-time for the purpose of either suspending recording or advancing playback of the television signal during each unwanted segment. A signature pattern associated with each segment of the television signal is detected and compared to stored signature patterns representative of selected segments such as commercial advertisement segments. If the signature pattern matches one of the stored signature patterns, the segment is thereby immediately identified as being one of the selected segments and is processed in real-time to control operation of the video recorder/player. If the signature pattern of the segment does not match any of the stored signature patterns, the segment is analyzed to determine whether the segment is nevertheless a selected segment and, if so, its signature pattern is stored along with the stored signature patterns.
Abstract:
Media broadcasts associated with different local markets can contain both nationally and locally broadcast content. To determine whether particular media items in the broadcasts are broadcast nationally or locally, the media items are identified and their time of occurrence is determined. The media items can then be classified as nationally or locally broadcast based, at least in part, on whether the occurrences of the media items in the different media broadcasts correspond in time, within a threshold.
