The present invention relates to automatic repeat request (ARQ) in wireless communication systems wherein a coded message block is spread over a plurality of sub-carriers or components. According to the invention an equalizing HARQ method is introduced. The equalizing HARQ identifies (215) and retransmits (230) the most distorted parts of a received coded message block. In addition, the retransmitted parts can optionally be relocated (225) to components of higher quality, which ensures good retransmission quality for those badly distorted parts in the prior transmission. After a soft-bit combination in a receiving node, the final received codeword experience an equalized quality variation with low multi-state performance loss.

The method includes the step of modifying a size of a circular buffer by excluding at least one coded bit from the circular buffer. The circular buffer collects interleaved bits from a PDCCH payload having a plurality of bits. The PDCCH payload is encoded with a convolutional code. The bits of the PDCCH payload are then interleaved. The interleaved bits are collected into the modified circular buffer. The bits are then selected from the modified circular buffer for transmission.

Methods for efficiently controlling the retransmission of data units in a wireless telecommunication system, wherein multiple complementary feedback mechanisms are used to control retransmission. A receiver attempts to decode each received data unit. If a data unit is successfully decoded, the receiver transmits positive feedback to the transmitter; if a data unit is not successfully decoded, the receiver transmits negative feedback to the transmitter. In all cases, the transmitter employs at least first and second feedback mechanisms for transmitting the positive and negative feedback. In an exemplary embodiment, acknowledgement (ACK) and non-acknowledgement (NACK) messages are sent in response to the receipt of each data unit on a first unreliable channel and Status Messages identifying sequence numbers of particular data units are periodically transmitted on a second reliable channel; the receiver preferably removes data units from its transmit window only upon receipt of a Status Message indicating successful decode.
