Disclosed is an embossing method and material made by the method, including at least a pair of embossing rolls having unmatched embossing patterns engraved independently from each other, and having enlarged sidewall clearances between adjacent, inter-engaged protrusions and recessions of the embossing patterns. The sidewall clearances can range from about 0.002″ (about 0.050 mm) to about 0.050″ (about 1.27 mm). The width of the protrusions can be greater than about 0.002″ or about 0.050 mm. The peripheral surface of at least one of the embossing rolls can comprise a metal, a plastic, a ceramic, or a rubber. Also disclosed is an embossed web material capable of being used as a wrap material for food products, made by the above process.

The invention concerns an absorbent paper product with basic weight of about 36 to about 105 g/m2 comprising at least three pleats, a first and second outer embossed pleats each comprising raised patterns consisting at least partially of discrete protuberances oriented towards the inside of the structure and a non-embossed central pleat, the pleats being associated by linking the distal surfaces of at least part of the protuberances of each of the outer pleats to the central pleat. The invention is characterized in that each of the embossed outer pleats is linked by means of an adhesive to said central pleat, and at least one of the pleats has a pattern density more than 30 protuberances per cm2.

The object of the present invention is an absorbent paper product including at least three plies, and a method of manufacture therefore. The absorbent paper product is of an approximate specific surface weight between 36 and 105 g/m2, and includes at least three plies, namely a central ply and two embossed upper and lower outer plies each including salient patterns composed of at least in part discrete protrusions. The plies are joined by joining at least part of the protrusions of each of the outer plies to the central ply. At least one of the outer plies has a pattern density larger than 30 protrusions/cm2. The embossed lower outer ply (2) includes combined high and low patterns (5 and 7) of respective heights (H) and (h). Glue is transferred in subsequent steps to a first web shaped flexible material via at least two patterned glue transfer rolls, in a pattern corresponding to the pattern of the glue transfer rolls. A second web shaped material is brought in contact with the glue bearing side of the first web shaped material in at least one press nip between at least one patterned lamination roll and an impression roll. The at least one lamination roll has a three-dimensional pattern having a shape and configuration so as to apply pressure to the combined first and second web shaped materials substantially only just opposite at least some of the glue bearing areas of the first web shaped material, and is driven in registry with the first and/or second glue transfer roll.
