A hydroxypropylated 2-nitro-p-phenylenediamine of formula (I), wherein R1 is a C1-4 alkyl, .beta.-hydroxyethyl, .beta.-hydroxypropyl or .gamma.-hydroxypropyl radical; R2 and R3 independently represent a .beta.-hydroxyethyl, .beta.-hydroxypropyl, .gamma.-hydroxypropyl or .beta.,.gamma.-dihydroxypropyl radical, with the proviso that at least one of R1, R2 and R3 is a .gamma.-hydroxypropyl radical, while the other two are not both a .beta.-hydroxyethyl radical; and cosmetically acceptable salts thereof. This compound may be used for directly dyeing hair to give blue through purplish blue shades which are wash-fast, light-fast, waterproof and sweat resistant.

The subject of the invention is a composition for the oxidation dyeing of keratinous fibers containing at least one N-substituted 4-hydroxyindoline derivative as coupler and at least one oxidation base. The invention also relates to new N-substituted 4-hydroxyindoline derivatives, to their process of synthesis, to their use as couplers for the oxidation dyeing of keratinous fibers, in combination with at least one oxidation base, and to the dyeing processes in which they are used.

The invention concerns the use of a 3-substituted para-aminophenol as an oxidation dye precursor for dyeing keratinous fibres, in particular human hair. The 3-substituted para-aminophenol has formula: ##STR1## where R.sub.1 represents alkyl, alkenyl, mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl, nitrile, cyanoalkyl, halogenoalkyl, aminoalkyl or alkoxyalkyl and R.sub.2 represents hydrogen, alkyl or mono- or polyhydroxyalkyl, provided that when R.sub.2 is hydrogen R.sub.1 is not methyl or trifluoromethyl, and to addition salts thereof with an acid. A dyeing composition for keratinous fibers and in particular for human keratinous fibers such as hair, comprising, in a suitable dyeing medium, at least one oxidation dye precursor chosen from 3-methyl-para-aminophenol, 2-methyl-para-aminophenol and 2-hydroxymethyl-para-aminophenol and their addition salts with an acid; at least one coupling agent chosen from the 2-methyl-5-aminophenols of formula (I): ##STR1## where R denotes hydrogen, methyl, ethyl, .beta.-hydroxyethyl or .gamma.-hydroxypropyl, and their addition salts with an acid; and at least one ortho-aminophenol chosen from ortho-aminophenol and 3-acetylamino-6-aminophenol or one of their addition salts with an acid. These sulfated metaaminophenols are used to dye keratinous fibers.
