Abstract: A method for controlling loss circulation in a subterranean formation and a convertible drilling mud operable to convert into a solid gel lost circulation material. The method includes circulating in a wellbore a nanosilica drilling fluid having a pH in a range of from about 8 to about 11 and a gel pH of less than 8, where the nanosilica drilling fluid includes an aqueous-based drilling mud, an alkaline nanosilica dispersion, and at least one additive. The method also includes introducing into the nanosilica drilling fluid an amount of a chemical activator sufficient to produce a convertible drilling mud where the chemical activator is an acid and the pH of the convertible drilling mud is less than the gel pH. The method also includes allowing the convertible drilling mud to convert into a solid gel lost circulation material.

Abstract: Embodiments are directed to a lubricant package for water based drilling fluids. The lubricant package includes water, a polyethylene glycol, and a lubricating agent. The lubricating agent includes triethanolamine, or a C12-C14 alcohol ethoxylate, or a combination of triethanolamine and C12-C14 alcohol ethoxylate. The weight ratio of the polyethylene glycol to the lubricating agent in the lubricant package is from 1:2 to 2:1. Embodiments are also directed to a water-based drilling fluid composition including an aqueous base fluid, one or more additives, and the lubricant package for water based drilling fluids.

Abstract: A lost circulation material (LCM) composition for sealing lost circulation zones in wellbores may include 50 weight percent to 97 weight percent epoxy resin, 2 weight percent to 30 weight percent curing agent, 0.1 weight percent to 40 weight percent weighting material, and 0.1 weight percent to 20 weight percent amide accelerator. The LCM composition may have a density of greater than or equal to 1121 kilograms per cubic meter and may be capable of being injected through a drill bit of a drill string into the lost circulation zone. The amide accelerator may enable the viscosity of the LCM composition to be reduced while providing a reduced cure time. Methods of treating a lost circulation of a wellbore with the LCM compositions are also disclosed.

Abstract: A lost circulation material (LCM) is provided having an alkaline nanosilica dispersion, a polyester activator, and a formaldehyde resin. The alkaline nanosilica dispersion and the polyester activator may form a gelled solid after interaction over a contact period, such that the gelled solid incorporates the formaldehyde resin. Methods of lost circulation control using the LCM are also provided.

Abstract: Anti-bit balling drilling fluids and methods of making and using drilling fluids are provided. The anti-bit balling drilling fluid contains water, a clay-based component, and at least one of a surfactant having the formula: R—(OC2H4)x—OH, where R is a hydrocarbyl group having from 10 to 20 carbon atoms and x is an integer from 1 and 10, or a polyethylene glycol having the formula: H—(O—CH2—CH2)n—OH, where n is an integer from 1 to 50. Methods of making and using these drilling fluids are also provided.

Abstract: A method of synthesizing sodium formate. The method includes reacting acetaldehyde, formaldehyde, and NaOH to form a raw reaction solution which includes pentaerythritol and sodium formate. The method also includes passing the raw reaction solution to an evaporator to reduce the water content of the raw reaction solution and remove any unreacted formaldehyde from the raw reaction solution to form a concentrated reaction solution and cooling the concentrated reaction solution to form pentaerythritol crystals in suspension while retaining sodium formate in solution. Further, the method includes filtering the cooled concentrated reaction solution to remove the pentaerythritol crystals and create a mother liquor comprising the sodium formate in solution and separating the sodium formate from the mother liquor.

Abstract: Cement slurries, cured cements, and methods of making cured cement and methods of using cement slurries are provided. The cement slurries have, among other attributes, increased yield point, reduced density, improved mechanical properties, increased resistance to H2S, and may be used, for instance, in the oil and gas drilling industry. The cement slurry comprises cement precursor material, Saudi Arabian volcanic ash, and an aqueous solution. The Saudi Arabian volcanic ash comprises SO3, CaO, SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, MgO, and K2O and the cement slurry is free of any other SiO2 additive.
