    Abstract: A fluid filtering apparatus and, in particular, a tubular filter construction for use therein. Each filter consists of one or more unitary cylindrical filter elements formed of porous material suitable for filtering inks, paints, and other liquids. Each filter element has upper and lower end portions and an intermediate portion therebetween, one of the end portions having a frustoconical protrusion and the other end portion having a frusto-conical recess. Such recesses and protrusions are adapted to mate with the protrusions and recesses, respectively, of adjacent filter elements aligned therewith, or with supporting structural components of a filter housing.

    Abstract: A repeatably rejuvenating filtration system of the pneumatic hydro-pulse type is disclosed as including the feeding of a solid/fluid feed slurry to be filtered into operative engagement with the interior porous wall surfaces of a plurality of open ended tubular filter elements so that filtrate passes outwardly through the walls of the filter elements and the solids are collected as a cake on the interior wall surface. The cake of solids on the interior wall surface is subjected to an axial discharge fluid flow through the interior of the filter elements along the length of the cake for removal of the cake axially along the interior of the filter elements. The system includes an arrangement for providing a pressure actuated pulse of fluid that may operate through the cylindrical walls toward the axial bore of the filter tubes to dislodge the filtered material, and may operate substantially simultaneously with the axial discharge flow for conducting the dislodged filtered material from the open ended bores. The versatility of the system enables the use of a recirculating arrangement that is effective to concentrate the solids content and control the thickness of the cake deposit.

    Abstract: A filter apparatus including a plurality of demountable filter cartridges which each include a replacement filter element. The cartridges are mounted in the upper portion of a bi-level partition that extends across a tank having an inlet below the partition and an outlet above the lower portion of the partition at a height to be bisected by the upper surface of the upper portion of the partition. A plurality of filter apertures through the partition each receive a cartridge and each cartridge is held in place via studs that screw into the partition and received in channels formed in a header portion of the cartridge so that the cartridge can be inserted into an aperture and turned to engage the shanks of the studs with the channels in the cartridge header. The headers of the cartridges are constructed in two parts and connected by a tubular connector having threads of opposite senses on its periphery and in its bore to be screwed into one part of the header and over a threaded projection on the other part of the header to clamp the two pieces of the header together about an O-ring that seals the cartridge to the aperture wall.

In filtering apparatus comprising a tank 10, Fig. 1, containing a plurality of filter units 22, each unit includes a perforated tube 32, Fig. 2, supporting an edge-type filter element 30 which is formed by a stack of annular discs, or edgewound ribbon, made of fibrous or non-fibrous material, e.g. paper or cellulose, the element being initially compressed by liquid pressure and a spring 34 acting upon a plate 36 which has resilient prongs 38 for engagement with projections 40 whereby it is subsequently retained in a permanent position, Fig. 3 (not shown), in accordance with the maximum rate of flow of liquid through the unit so as to compress the filter element by a corresponding constant amount. Projections 40 may be in the form of separate rings or a helix, Fig. 4 (not shown). The end 42 of tube 32 has a sealing ring 44 and engages with a hole in a partition 16 which is situated below an inlet port 12 in tank 10. Liquid discharged from the interior of each filter unit leaves the apparatus through a port 14. A plate 24 retains the units in their mounted positions.
