Abstract: A device for engaging articles of varying thicknesses includes an anvil defining a gripping surface, a gripper finger assembly, and a finger actuator means for pivoting the gripper finger assembly with respect to the anvil. The gripper finger assembly includes a gripper finger, a finger support, and a spring which engages the finger and finger support and spring biases the finger into a neutral position with respect to the finger support. The finger may be moved out of its neutral position in either direction when forces in excess of predetermined forces are applied to the finger.

Abstract: Low-energy scanning transmission electron microscopy is achieved by using a sharply pointed electrode as a source of electrons having energies less than 10 eV and scanning the electron emitting pointed source across the surface of a self-supported thin film of material to be investigated at an essentially constant distance on the order of nanometers. The electrons transmitted through the specimen are sensed by a suitable detector and the output signal of the detector is used to control a display unit, such as a CRT display or a plotter. A scanning signal generating means simultaneously controls both the scanning of the electron emitting point source and the display unit while a separation control unit holds the distance between the point source and surface at a constant value. The electron emitting point source and associated mechanical drives as well as the specimen film and electron detector are all positioned in a vacuum chamber and isolated from vibration by a damped suspension apparatus.

Abstract: In order to enable a piston cylinder unit 1,2 with air entry through a hollow shaft 6, to be operated in either mode of operation with a single type of shaft, it is proposed in accordance with the invention to manufacture the shaft 6 in three parts, namely an upper air inlet portion 6a, an intermediate portion 6b which provides access for air to the cylinder via one or more apertures 18, and an operating end portion 6c. These three parts are threaded together and sealed by seals 21 and 24. Captive nuts 3 and 8 are provided at both ends of the cylinder so that the cylinder may be attached to a yoke 4 by either end, with the opposite end carrying a bearing 9 for the air inlet portion 6a of the shaft. If it is desired for the piston to operate in the opposite mode of operation, the portions 6a and 6c are interchanged and the cylinder is attached to the yoke using the captive nuts 8 rather than the nuts 3.

Abstract: A hollow electrically conductive probe and method are provided for electrocoating a metal container. The probe is insertable into the container, which is preferably inverted, and electrocoating material is flowed through the probe to fill the container with a transient bath of electrocoating material. The probe includes a means for retarding the flow of the electrocoating material from the container interior by establishing an opposing flow of electrocoating material to increase the flow turbulence without creating discontinuities of flow in order to facilitate the electrocoating of corners and recesses near the container bottom. Preferably, peripheral openings about the probe body direct flowing electrocoating material toward the container bottom.
