摘要: A method and apparatus for manufacturing an optical cable comprising at least one metal tube housing at least one optical fiber and having a predetermined excess fiber length (EFL) is described. In this method the metal tube is plastically deformed and shortened by a predetermined amount (St) greater than the predetermined EFL and is plastically deformed after shortening to provide a controlled elongation thereof so as to reach the predetermined excess fiber length. An optical cable so manufactured has a local excess fiber length (EFL) varying of or less than 0.2% along the longitudinal extension of the cable with respect to an average EFL of the cable.

摘要: An optical cable for communication includes at least one retaining element blocked with respect to the water propagation as well as a process for manufacturing such an optical cable. The optical cable includes, in addition to the retaining element, at least two transmission elements housed within the retaining element and a water swellable yarn housed within the retaining element. The water swellable yarn is selected according to the following equation: V w V TF = k V t + R ( I ) in which Vw is the volume of the water swellable yarn after swelling upon contact with water; VTF is the total free volume in the retaining element; k is a constant≧180; R is a constant≧1.4; and Vt is the free volume per each transmission element. Advantageously, the optical cable is water-blocked and the water swellable yarn does not induce microbending effects on the transmission elements.

摘要: A submarine optical cable resistant to a longitudinal flow of water accidentally penetrated inside it and a method for controlling the longitudinal flow of water inside the cable. The cable has a longitudinal cavity disposed along a deformable elongated hollow body. The longitudinal cavity is suitable dimensioned so that the head losses of the water flowing through the cavity are lower than the head losses of the water flowing inside the buffer tubes. Thus, in case of accidental ingress of water inside the submarine cable, the water flow inside the buffer tubes is prevented from reaching long penetration lengths by the hydrostatic pressure of the water inside the longitudinal cavity acting onto the outer surface of the buffer tube.

摘要: The described ribbon optical fibre cable comprises a cylindrical core (9) provided, on the outer surface thereof, with parallel grooves (10) extending in a helical manner along the cable axis, at least a pair of ribbons (1) being radially superposed within at least one of said grooves (10). Each ribbon (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e) comprises a plurality of optical fibres (2) each of which is covered with a primary layered coating (3), and a common coating (4) covers all the optical fibres of the ribbon. The primary coating (3) is formed with a first layer (5) directly in contact with the fibres (2) and a second layer (6) external to the first layer (5), the modulus of elasticity of said first layer (5) being lower than the modulus of elasticity of said second layer (6). Applied to each ribbon (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e) is a longitudinal tension greater than the longitudinal tension applied to the ribbon radially overlying the former. The process for making this ribbon optical fibre cable provides for the ribbons (1) being laid into the grooves by applying to each ribbon (1a, 1b, 1c, 1d, 1e) a longitudinal tension greater than the longitudinal tension applied to the ribbon radially superposed thereto.
