A mobile installation for loading, transporting and unloading track parts such as ties on, in and from open top railroad cars including a train mounted for mobility along a railroad track and having a plurality of open top railroad cars. Adjacent ones of the railroad cars are coupled together and each one of the railroad cars has two parallel side walls with top edges extending in the direction of the railroad track, and two end walls, the end wals of the adjacent railroad cars defining respective gaps therebetween. A power-driven crane is provided for loading and unloading the track parts and has an undercarriage supporting the crane for mobility in the direction of the railroad track. There is also a track supporting the undercarriage of the crane for mobility above the top edges of the railroad cars in said direction. The track includes two parallel guide rails mounted on the top edges of the railroad cars and is spaced apart a distance corresponding to the gage of the crane undercarriage. The guide rails extend beyond the end walls of the railroad cars into the gaps between the adjacent cars to provide a substantially continuous track for support of the crane undercarriage along the train of cars. The power-driven crane comprises a pivotal overhead outrigger and another outrigger mounted for mobility on the guide rails, the other outrigger carries an endless conveyor band for receiving and storing the track parts. A bridge-like gantry crane is mounted for mobility on the guide rails, the gantry crane includes means for loading the track parts on, and unloading the track parts from, the endless conveyor band.

A continuously advancing track leveling, lining and tamping machine comprises a heavy main frame supported on two spaced apart undercarriages for continuous movement in an operating direction and a power plant, drives and operating controls as well as an operator's cab for operating the drives and controls mounted on the main frame. Two separate carrier frames are arranged between the two undercarriages of the heavy main frame, and a drive connected to the heavy main frame longitudinally displaces the carrier frames in relation to the main frame whereby the carrier frames may be intermittently advanced during the continuous movement of the heavy main frame, this drive having a displacement path corresponding to a distance between at least two successive ties. One of the separate carrier frames supports tools for tamping ballast in intermittent tamping cycles under respective ones of the ties at points of intersection of the two rails and the respective ties, and a track lofting and lining unit is mounted on the other one of the separate carrier frames. The tamping tools and the lifting and lining unit is arranged within sight of the operator's cab, and the power plant delivers power to, and the operating controls control, the tamping, track lifting and lining. Track leveling and lining reference systems are associated with the track lifting and lining unit.

The pair of outer guide rollers defines a rigid measuring reference in the wave length of the longer undulations and they are spaced from each other a distance of 2 m. A respective lateral pair of the inner or intermediate guide rollers is selectively engaged with the running surface to define a rigid measuring reference in the shorter wave length of the ripples and these rollers are spaced from each other at least about 1/6th to 1/8th of the first-mentioned distance. A rail head running surface sensing element is vertically adjustably mounted on the measuring carriage substantially centered between the pairs of guide rollers.
