Electrophotographic process control in copiers and printers using test patches at different locations within the image frame. Test patches or areas are placed at various locations in subsequent frames to reduce any memory discontinuities encountered when high density areas are repeatedly placed at the same location within an image frame. The overall image frame includes a plurality of image or picture areas which contain unrelated information data and at least one these areas is replaced with a process test area in some or all of the subsequently produced frames. The test area includes several test strips of varying density which may also be positioned differently within the test area in subsequent frames. The variation in location of the test areas and the position of the test strips can be by random selection or by a predetermined pattern which places the areas and strips at several possible locations. The locations are communicated to the process controller so that appropriate sensors can properly monitor and measure the test patches.

A method for transforming an image expressed in terms of a first image encoding to a second image encoding, includes converting a set of original scene exposure-factor values into corresponding first and second image encoding values. A transform is then derived between the first image encoding values and the second image encoding values. The transform is then applied to an image encoded in said first image encoding. Examples of different encoding that can be transformed include Rec. 709, sRGB and other known image encoding standards. A system for performing such transformations as well as an electronic device that is capable of performing such transformations are also disclosed.

Apparatus and associated methods employed therein, for objectively providing an accurate appearance match between images produced by two imaging systems (e.g. a target image produced by one such system, e.g. a press sheet (140) generated by a printing press (130), which is to be matched by a replica image produced by another such system, e.g. a proof (120) generated by a color halftone proofing system(110)) and thereby calibrate the performance of one imaging system, e.g. the proofing system, to that of the other system, e.g. the printing press. Specifically, measurement data, such as illustratively densitometric N,R,G,B measurements, is obtained for the same portions of the press sheet and proof. This data is then transformed into a color space which encodes color information in a pre-defined manner that approximates color preferences inherent in human color interpretation. Thereafter, through use of a pre-determined model of the proofing system, incorporated into pre-defined matching principles which objectively and quantitatively define an accurate appearance match between the images produced by both systems, changes in operational settings for the proofing system, such as solid area densities and tint dot areas, are determined which will calibrate the response of the proofing system to that of the press. Consequently, tone and color rendition produced by the proofing system is modified to provide an accurate appearance match to that obtained, from a common image source, on the press, given the judgmental preferences of a human observer and the performance limitations of the proofing system.

The luminance-factor values are converted to corresponding Rec. 709 signal values. The luminance-factor values are then mapped according to a desired system tone reproduction characteristic to corresponding luminous intensity values to be reproduced by the non-CRT television display device. The target display characteristic is generated by relating the corresponding Rec. 709 signal values to corresponding luminous intensity values.

Apparatus and associated methods employed therewith for accurately providing a desired ("Aim") tone reproduction characteristic in an output image through a DDCP (direct digital color proofing) imaging chain (such as that implemented by a raster image processor (200), particularly a screening process (660) occurring therein, and a marking engine (130)) and for significantly reducing the number of test proof images that need to be produced and measured to achieve this result. Specifically, "Benchmark" operating conditions and intrinsic performance (i.e. "Benchmark" entry point data) of the DDCP imaging chain thereat are first defined. Then, based upon differences (such as in screen ruling and solid area density) between a desired operating condition and an appropriate "Benchmark" condition, "Benchmark" values associated with the latter are adapted, through use of a pre-defined model and associated sensitivity coefficients that collectively predict the performance of the DDCP imaging chain, to determine corresponding "Adapted" values that accurately specify the intrinsic process tone reproduction characteristic of the imaging chain at the desired operating condition. Thereafter, in response to both "Aim" (400) and the "Adapted" values for the desired operating condition, a look-up table is fabricated to contain, for all possible input dot areas, the "Aim" dot gain modified by the inverse of this expected intrinsic process tone reproduction characteristic applied to the desired tone reproduction characteristic. Incoming dot area values (i.e. contone values) for a corresponding separation are then routed through this table, prior to screening and writing, in order to intentionally vary the tone reproduction value of each such value so that the resulting dots in the proof image will accuratel exhibit the desired "Aim" tone reproduction characteristic substantially free from corruption due to the native tone reproduction characteristic of the imaging chain.
