Abstract:
An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network or the like providing for booting of switches from one or more boot servers. The booting process comprises the steps of a switch querying as to possible communication paths with a boot manager and then establishing a boot communication channel with the boot manager. Boot messages are then communicated over the boot communication channel. Importantly, boot messages may be transmitted between the booting switch and the boot manager through a neighboring switch and intermediate switches by using the neighboring switch's virtual service path to effect such communication. This allows communication of these messages through translation by the neighbor's and the intermediate switch's switch fabric and without need for utilization of the neighbor's or the intermediate switch's switch controller.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method of providing a user with a web-browser supplement is disclosed. One method includes providing access to a focal group, wherein the focal group includes at least one member having at least one association with the user. Access is provided to information associated with the at least one member having relevance to the focal group. Web browsing by the user is supplemented by the information of the members of the focal group.

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for virtualizing port adapter resources such as network interface cards (NICs) used to connect servers to packet based networks. Resources are offloaded from individual servers onto a resource virtualization switch. Servers connected to the resource virtualization switch using an I/O bus connection share access to NICs. Redundancy can be provided using multipathing mechanisms implemented at individual servers or high availability mechanisms implemented at the resource virtualization switch. Switchover can occur between ports on the same port adapter, between ports on separate adapters, or between ports on separate resource virtualization switches.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus for providing a device for forwarding packets in a network are disclosed. A first router and a second router having a shared set of interfaces are provided, enabling the first router and the second router to share forwarding data for forwarding packets on the shared set of interfaces.

Abstract:
A technique implements forwarding operation shortcuts at a switch for multicast data traffic routed between subnetworks of a computer network. A first multicast frame is forwarded from the switch to a router, which peforms route processing and forwarding operations for a packet encapsulated within the frame. During execution of the operations, the router provides multicast flow and additional information concerning the routed packet to the switch in accordance with a novel multicast shortcut control protocol. The information is used by the switch to implement a novel multicast shortcut for subsequent frames received at the switch having the multicast packet flow.
Abstract:
An asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) network or the like providing for dynamic client discovery. Clients transmit client registration messages over the virtual service paths of their associated switches to the central management supervisor. Responsive to receiving the client registration message, the central management supervisor updates its registration tables and transmits a client registration acknowledgement, again over the virtual service path. By using the virtual service path of their associated switch to effect communication with the central management supervisor, there is no need to incur overhead of having the transmission managed by the associated switch's (and intermediate switch's) controller. Rather, the switch merely acts to update the cell's header using the switch's switch fabric. Keep alive messages are exchanged, again over the virtual service path, between the central management supervisor and the client.
