Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a method and apparatus for playing a game of skill in a networked environment. A host server transmits a game data packet to each participant after receiving a request from the participant. Upon initiation of game play, the participants are shown identical game messages so that each participant is playing the same game. After a participant believes they have won the game, a message is sent to the server. The server then evaluates the performance of all the participants and determines a skill level for each participant.

A pre-formatted optical data storage tape (10) including an elongated linear polymer layer having at least one pattern of optically readable embossments (114) on at least one surface of the polymer layer, and an optical recording layer covering the pattern of optically readable embossments (114) of the elongated linear polymer layer, wherein the optical recording layer is adapted such that recorded marks (120) may be made in the recording layer by directing a focused source of energy into the recording layer.
Abstract:
A method for secondary-actuator failure-detection and recovery in a dual-stage actuator disk drive includes running a calibration test by the servo control processor and measuring the position of the secondary actuator relative to its neutral position in response to the calibration test. The secondary-actuator failure detection and calibration test can be performed on a regular schedule or at selected times, such as at disk drive start-up. With the primary actuator biased at a test location, such as a crash stop or a load/unload ramp, the servo control processor generates a test signal to the secondary actuator and receives a relative-position signal (RPS) from the relative-position sensor in response to the test signal. The test comprises two measurements: a measurement of the secondary actuator static characteristics, and a measurement of the secondary actuator dynamic characteristics.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and a system for generating optimal feedforward signal for the seek control to suppress the RTV (Random Transient Vibrations) and the seek acoustic noise. One aspect is directed to a method of providing a revised feedforward signal using an adaptive filter in a feedforward control system for controlling an actuator to move a head to seek a track and settle on the track of a disk in a disk drive apparatus. The method comprises performing a seek operation of the head using an initial feedforward signal; obtaining an error signal at settling after performing the seek operation; determining filter characteristics of the adaptive filter to minimize the error signal; and implementing the adaptive filter having the determined filter characteristics in the feedforward control system to produce a revised feedforward signal for controlling the actuator for moving the head in the disk drive apparatus.
Abstract:
Embodiments of the present invention provide a way to modify the controller of a HDD head actuator to increase the error rejection capability and suppress the wideband vibration that affects the head motion. In one embodiment, a system to suppress influence of an external disturbance to an actuator comprises a controller providing a controller output as an actuator input to drive an actuator; a feedback loop to feed a head signal at an output of the actuator back as an input to the controller to produce an error signal; and a plurality of peak filters coupled to the controller and having different peak frequencies. Each peak filter has a peak filter input including the error signal, and has a peak filter output. A supervisor module is coupled with the peak filters to selectively add or delete the peak filter output of each peak filter to the actuator input to drive the actuator.
Abstract:
A process for inhibiting the formation of surface haze on finished transparent soap bars involving the steps of: (a) providing a finished transparent soap bar; (b) providing a coating component selected from the group consisting of water, a C1-C8 aliphatic alcohol, a polyol, and mixtures thereof; (c) applying the coating component onto the finished transparent soap bar to form a coated transparent soap bar; and (d) immediately packaging the coated transparent soap bar.
Abstract:
Systems and methods are provided for presenting a picture-in-picture (PIP) window on a television or other display generated by a set-top box (STB) or other video receiver. The picture-in-picture window is presented in conjunction with a navigation feature on the display. A two-dimensional input associated with the navigation feature is received from a remote control having a touchpad or other two-dimensional input device. The picture-in-picture window on the display is appropriately adjusted in response to the two-dimensional input.
Abstract:
Systems and methods provide for graphically providing customer service features on a set top box (STB) or other television receiver in response to viewer instructions received from a remote control. Imagery including a customer service tile is presented on the display. A two-dimensional input is received from the remote control that indicates that the tile has been selected, and, in response to the received two-dimensional input, the customer service feature is provided. The customer service feature may provide information received from a remote source via a network, programming connection or other medium.
Abstract:
The exemplary embodiments of the method and system according to the present invention provide a system and method for controlling access to audiovisual content such as television shows, video-on-demand services or streaming video which can be delivered by cable, satellite, wired or wireless networks, cell phones, the Internet, etc. More particularly, the present invention provides a capability to define certain criteria which can be used to restrict access to content based on combinations of various parameters including, but not limited to, time of day, day of the week, type of content, source of content, content display device, etc. These criteria may also be provided by data storage arrangements or a network, and access restrictions specified by such criteria can be associated with a plurality of display devices.
