Abstract:
An optical data store is specified, having a data storage layer with a non-toxic and biodegradable polymer as light-sensitive storage medium which has photo-inducible anisotropy, for the induction of which a threshold value of the optical intensity has to be exceeded. The light-sensitive material is preferably bacteriorhodopsin which, by way of example, is immobilized in a manner embedded in a suitable matrix material or, if appropriate, in a crosslinked manner. The storage medium permits a high storage density and can be applied in a simple manner, for instance by printing onto a substrate.
Abstract:
What are proposed are a method and a system for guaranteeing the authenticity or checking the authenticity of documents, in particular banknotes or the like, which each have a substrate (1) with specific substrate features (2), an image of the substrate being recorded before a document is issued and the image data obtained in the process being stored in a manner assigned to document data, in order to keep these data ready for possible later comparison enquiries concerning the authenticity of an issued document.
Abstract:
A light modulator (1) is proposed which has a photochromic layer (15), which can be activated optically by control light, for modulating signal light, and at least one optically transparent substrate (13) for the photochromic layer (15), in which the light modulator (1) has at least one filter layer (14), which reflects the control light in a wavelength-selective fashion for the purpose of retroreflecting control light which has penetrated the photochromic layer (15). The reflecting filter layer (14) ensures that the control light is utilized efficiently for the photochemical conversion (photoconversion) of the photochromic material, since the control light passes twice through the photochromic layer (15). The reflecting filter layer (14) has the function, furthermore, of separating the control light from the modulated signal light such that the modulated signal light can be evaluated without significant interference from the control light.
Abstract:
Compositions of bacteriorhodopsin variants with increased memory time and their use for reversible optical information recording are disclosed. The compositions are characterized in that the configuration of the retinal of the photoproduct is different from the configuration of the retinal of the initial state and other than 13-cis; the pH value of the composition lies between 3 and 11; the water content of the composition lies between 1 and 30% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition; and additives for modulating the proton mobility are present in a concentration between 1 and 80% by weight of the mass of purple membrane composition used, and if required matrix materials in a concentration of up to 10% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition are present. These compositions may be used in reversible information recording systems.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a security material comprising a carrier and at least one photochromic Protein and/or a mutein of a photochromic protein. The security material is characterized in that it comprises at least one irreversible photosensitive layer on the carrier, and the at least one photochromic protein and/or mutein is contained at least in the at least one photosensitive layer and/or in an optional additional layer. The inventive security material is also characterized in that it is highly forgery-proof, the photochromic biomolecule cannot be removed therefrom in a usable form, and the photochromic biomolecule does not need to be supplied to a large group of clients.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an artificial intraocular lens consisting of a polymer material which permits a change of the optical properties of the artificial intraocular lens when exposed to light. This enables the lens to be exactly adjusted to the required visual acuity upon implantation thereof.

Abstract:
In processes of holography using bacteriorhodopsin-based recording media, it is essential to design the signal-to-noise ratio to be as favorable as possible. This is achieved by recording the hologram using circularly polarized light and reconstructing the hologram by using linearly polarized light, specific beam components being selected as a function of polarization in the beam path of the reconstructed hologram. The process is suitable both for purely holographic applications and also for other processes which include one or more intermediate or partial steps involving holography.
