Abstract: An apparatus has a central lens body for providing vision correction for a patient. The lens body has a central aperture and is configured as one of: a diffractive lens or a refractive lens. The lens body has at least one haptic extending from the lens body, and the central aperture has a form of a circular hole extending fully through the lens body when the apparatus is implanted in the eye. The lens body is formed from a substantially transparent material and the central aperture includes a darkened perimeter. The darkened perimeter of the central aperture includes a darkened internal wall extending through the lens body from an anterior surface to a posterior surface of the lens body.

Abstract: A system for preparation of an implant and ab interno insertion of the implant into an eye including a handle having one or more actuators and an elongated shaft having an outer sheath and an elongate member positioned within a lumen of the tubular outer sheath. The system includes a recess sized for holding a patch of material fixed relative to the handle and a cutting member movable relative to the handle and to the recess. The cutting member cuts the patch of material into an implant as the cutting member moves towards a cutting configuration. The implant, once cut, is axially aligned with the lumen of the tubular outer sheath. The inner elongate member is movable relative to the tubular outer sheath to advance the implant into a deployment position in the lumen of the tubular outer sheath for delivery into the eye. Related devices and methods are provided.

Abstract: Described herein is a method for replacing retinal tissue with retinal cell-embedded biodegradable matrix ribbons. The biodegradable matrix ribbons can be provided as a sheet and subsequently cut into ribbons. Alternatively, the biodegradable matrix ribbons can be constructed in ribbon form. The thin ribbons can then be implanted into a patient's eye through small scleral and/or retinal incisions. Once inside the ocular space, the ribbons can be positioned at a target retinal space in a confluent fashion in order to provide an area of biodegradable matrix having retinal cells embedded within and on outer surfaces thereof.

Abstract: This disclosure generally relates to cell-based therapies for treatment of visual disorders, including disorders of the cornea. Methods are exemplified for directed differentiation of corneal cells from stem cells. Compositions of corneal endothelial cells and uses thereof are also provided. Exemplary compositions exhibit improved cell density and/or more “youthful” gene expression relative to cells obtained from donated tissue.

Abstract: The invention concerns an intraocular lens implant for placement into an intracapsular space of a lens capsule of an eye and a composition, kit and methods related to the lens implant. The lens implant is designed for a placement into a posterior portion of the intracapsular space after removal of a native lens body and has a convex posterior surface. The lens implant is formed of one part and is manufactured from a suitable transparent non-structural cellular material. This keeps an anterior portion of the intracapsular space free of the implant which is dimensioned to comprise at most 40% of a volume of the native lens body.

Abstract: A process for micro-tissue encapsulation of cells includes coating a tissue scaffold stamp with an extracellular matrix compound. The process includes depositing the tissue scaffold stamp onto a thermoresponsive substrate and seeding the tissue scaffold stamp with a cell culture. A cell culture forms a cell patch that is attached to the extracellular matrix compound. A monolayer on the tissue scaffold stamp for which borders of the monolayer maintain expressions for cell-cell junctions, wherein the cell-cell junctions of the monolayer are configured to express tension forces. The process includes removing the thermoresponsive substrate. The process includes folding the micro-tissue structure by suspending the micro-tissue in the solvent. The folded micro-tissue structure is collected from the solvent and administered to an organism.
