    Abstract: A lancet cartridge has a U-shaped support with a pair of anchor portions, a base portion, and a pair of deformable leg portions connecting the anchor portions to the base portion. The pair of deformable leg portions change shape from an initial shape to an extended shape in response to an external applied force and recover to a retracted shape upon removal of the force. The lancet cartridge also has a lancet having a tip end, an opposing base end, and an axis extending between the tip end and the base end. A portion of the lancet is disposed between the pair of deformable leg portions of the U-shaped support. The lancet is movable between a starting position, an extended puncturing position, and an ending position along the axis of the lancet in a path defined by the U-shaped support. When the lancet is in the starting position, the tip end of the lancet is disposed at least partially through the base portion of the U-shaped support, and the U-shaped support is in the initial shape. When the lancet is in the extended puncturing position, the tip end of the lancet is extended through the base of the U-shaped support, and the U-shaped support is in the extended shape. When the U-shaped support recovers to its retracted shape upon removal of the force, the lancet is retracted to the end position.

    Abstract: A lancet is provided where the same opening of the same cap serves both as a removable cover prior to use of the lancet, and then interacts in a locking engagement with the lancet base to provide protection from contamination after use. Thus, the invention provides a lancet having a cutting portion and a cap portion. The cutting portion has a blade or needle, a base supporting the blade or needle, and a flange extending outward from the base. The cap portion (1) fits over the blade or needle and interacts with the base to provide a sealing engagement, (2) has a slot formed therein sized to slidably receive the flange, and (3) has a bound opening circumferentially displaced from the slot and sized to receive and capture the flange. The lancet may have a plurality of flanges extending from the base, for example two, and an equal plurality of slots and bound openings.

    Abstract: A data collection system is formed from an analyte detection meter and a base station. The meter and the base station are operatively connected to one another to transfer data from the meter. The base station is able to communicate transferred data to a data receiving server, and the transfer of data occurs in response to a defined stimulus such as the proximity of the meter and base station or an alarm set at a predetermined time of day. The data collection system can be used in combination with a system interface that provides a data management system (DMS) resident on a device such as a personal computer. The DMS can recognize a particular meter and may incorporate into the displayed information not only the data resident on the meter but also information previously transferred from the meter. The DMS may be launched on the computer as soon as connection with a meter is detected. The DMS may also reproduce the display of the particular meter on the display of the computer such that the user need only learn one set of controls. Changes to the setting of the meters may be accomplished through the computer and an update transferred and stored on the connected meter.

The lancing device has a cantilevered priming arm having a first arm portion that is generally parallel to an internal channel of the device and a second arm portion that is generally perpendicular to the internal channel. The second arm portion is connected to a lancet carrier and movement of the first arm portion toward the internal channel draws the lancet carrier to a primed position and stores energy in a lancet driver.
