Abstract:
THE INVENTION RELATES TO NEW ACRYLONITRILE GRAFT POLYMERS AND TO PROCESS FOR THIS PRODUCTION , USING AS A GRAFT BASIS A COPOLYMER OF ETHYLENE AND VINLYPYRROLIDONE AND GRAFTING ACRYLONITRILE THEREON. THE ACRYLONITRILE GRAFT POLYMER HAVE AN IMPROVED AFFINITY FOR WATER AND, AT THE SAME TIME, A HIGH SOFTENING POINT.

1,134,384. Quaternary ammonium salts of sulphonamides. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 21 June, 1967 [11 July, 1966], No. 28635/67. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Compounds of the formula where the various R radicals may be the same or different and are monovalent alphatic, aromatic, cycloaliphatic or araliphatic radicals, are prepared by reacting an appropriate quaternary ammonium halide with an alkali metal (e.g. sodium) derivative of an appropriate sulphonamide in an anhydrous solvent, e.g. ethanol. Specified compounds are the tetra methyl ammonium salts of N-methylmethane- and N - methylbenzene - sulphonamide, the tetramethyl - and tetraethyl - ammonium salts of N-methyl cyclohexane-sulphonamide, and the phenyl benzyl dimethyl ammonium salts of N-methylbenzene-, N-methylcyclohexane- and N-ethyl cyclohexane-sulphonamido.
Abstract:
A solution of an acrylonitrile polymer is produced by polymerizing acrylonitrile in an organic solvent for polyacrylonitrile, at a temperature of from + 10 DEG to - 68 DEG C. in the presence of 0.1 m.mol. to 0.1 mol., per mol of monomer, of an alkali metal salt of an aromatic sulphonamide of the formula wherein M represents Li, Na, K, Rb or Cs, Ar represents an aryl radical and R1 represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl radical. Specified salts are those of benzene sulphonamide, benzene -N-methyl sulphonamide, p-toluene N-isopropyl or N-methyl sulphonamide and benzene N-hexyl sulphonamide and suitable solvents are dimethyl formamide and dimethyl sulphoxide. In examples solutions of polyacrylonitrile in dimethyl formamide are produced using as catalyst potassium or sodium p-toluene N-methyl sulphonamide. The catalyst is deactivated with HCl or HCO2H.
