    Abstract: A composite drive shaft includes a web-based body defining a longitudinal axis. The web-based body has a first composite layup end section, a second composite layup end section that is opposite to the first composite layup end section, a first spiral composite element extending between the first composite end section and the second composite layup end section, and a second spiral composite element extending between the first composite end section and the second composite layup end section. The first spiral composite element and the second composite spiral element are embedded into the first composite layup end section, and the second composite layup end section. The first composite spiral element and the second composite spiral element are arranged in a bi-directional orientation relative to the longitudinal axis. The first spiral composite element and the second spiral composite element are arranged at pre-determined angles and possess a uni-directional fiber-reinforced polymer-matrix composite structure.

    Abstract: A flexible coupling includes a first flange having an outer edge, a first surface, a second surface opposite the first surface, and a first plurality of passages. A second flange including an outer edge section, a first surface section, a second surface section opposite the first surface section, and a second plurality of passages. A connecting element extends between and connecting the first flange and the second flange through one of the first plurality of passages and one of the second plurality passages. The connecting element includes a connecting member having a first stop element and a second stop element. A compliant component is arranged on the connecting element. The compliant component is positioned on the connecting member between one of: the first stop element and the first surface; the second stop element and the second surface section; and between the second surface and the first surface section.

    Abstract: A flexible shaft includes first and second shaft portions, first and second angular displacement couplings, and an axial displacement coupling generally extending and centered to a rotational axis. The first shaft portion extends between the first angular displacement coupling and the axial displacement coupling. The second shaft portion extends between the axial displacement coupling and the second angular displacement coupling. The axial displacement coupling includes an outer periphery, first wall attached to and extending radially between the first shaft portion and the periphery, and a second wall attached to and extending radially between the second shaft portion and the periphery. The first and second walls are resiliently flexible to facilitate axial displacement between the first and second shaft portions.

    Abstract: An aircraft drive shaft that includes an outer shaft with a first diameter that is configured to couple a first gearbox and a second gearbox to provide power transfer between the two gearboxes. An inner shaft that is concentric with the outer shaft and has a second diameter that is configured to provide structural support to the outer shaft. A gap is located between an outer peripheral surface of the inner shaft and an inner peripheral surface of the outer shaft. The gap has a size from the outer peripheral surface to the inner peripheral surface that is at least as large as a largest ballistic projectile cross-section size that the aircraft is expected to encounter on an upcoming mission. A sleeve is located at least at a first end of the outer shaft and connects the outer shaft to the inner shaft.

    Abstract: A metallic coupling for a drive shaft includes a first cylindrical flange extending axially along a center axis and a second cylindrical flange extending axially along the center axis and spaced axially from the first cylindrical flange.     Abstract: A flexible coupling includes a first flange and a second flange, wherein in a relaxed state the first flange and the second flange are each aligned along a longitudinal axis. A plurality of first coupling members extends from the first flange. Each first coupling member includes a first and second driving beam meeting at a first node to form a topologically triangular truss. A plurality of second coupling members extend from the second flange. Each second coupling member includes a first and second driven beam extending from the second flange and meeting at a second node to form a topologically triangular truss.
