Abstract: An example system includes an input channel having a first end and a second end to receive particles through the first end, a separation chamber, at least two output channels, and an integrated pump to facilitate flow through the separation chamber. The separation chamber is in fluid communication with the second end of the input channel. The separation chamber has a passive separation structure, the passive separation structure including an array of columns spaced apart to facilitate separation of particles in a flow based on a size of the particles. Each output channel is in fluid communication with the separation chamber to receive separated particles. The integrated pump is positioned within at least one of the input channel or one of the at least two output channels.

Abstract: A multiplex nucleic acid detection system includes an electrochemical cell and a nucleic acid amplifying fluid. The electrochemical cell includes a reference electrode, a first surface-modified redox electrode including a first working redox electrode with a first surface-attached nucleic acid oligomer attached to the first working electrode, a second surface-modified redox electrode including a second working electrode with a second surface-attached nucleic acid oligomer attached to the second working electrode that is different than the first surface-attached nucleic acid oligomer, and a counter-electrode. The nucleic acid amplifying fluid in this example includes a first dispersed nucleic acid oligomer having a complimentary reverse orientation relative to the first surface-attached nucleic acid oligomer, a second dispersed nucleic acid oligomer having a complimentary reverse orientation relative to the second surface-attached nucleic acid oligomer, and a redox-active compound having affinity to the nucleic acid.

Abstract: In one example in accordance with the present disclosure, a sample Sample Preparation System preparation system is described. The system includes a reaction chamber to hold at least one fluid. An inlet impedance sensor of the system detects a level of conductivity through at least one inlet of the reaction chamber and an outlet impedance sensor detects a level of conductivity through at least one outlet of the reaction chamber. A controller of the system, based on measured levels of conductivity, determines a state of a reaction within the reaction chamber.

Abstract: The present disclosure is drawn to inertial pumps. An inertial pump can include a microfluidic channel, a fluid actuator located in the microfluidic channel, and a check valve located in the microfluidic channel. The check valve can include a moveable valve element, a narrowed channel segment located upstream of the moveable valve element, and a blocking element formed in the microfluidic channel downstream of the moveable valve element. The narrowed channel segment can have a width less than a width of the moveable valve element so that the moveable valve element can block fluid flow through the check valve when the moveable valve element is positioned in the narrowed channel segment. The blocking element can be configured such that the blocking element constrains the moveable valve element within the check valve while also allowing fluid flow when the moveable valve element is positioned against the blocking element.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a microfluidic channel and a flow sensor along the microfluidic channel. The flow sensor includes a heat emitting resistor for connection to an electric current source, analytical parameter sensor and electronics. The heat emitting resistor has a resistance that varies in response to temperature. The electrical parameter sensor is to sense an electrical parameter of the heat emitting resistor that is based on the resistance of the heat emitting resistor. The electronics determine a flow based on the sensed electrical parameter.
