An adsorbent for separating para-isomers from C.sub.8 or C.sub.10 aromatic hydrocarbons, specifically, a faujasite zeolite wherein about 2.5 to 25 percent, based on the total exchangeable cation sites originally present within the faujasite zeolite, is decationized and metal ions at the residual cation sites are exchanged substantially with potassium and/or barium ions. The adsorbent is used in separating the para-isomer, which is isolated by desorbing from the adsorbent.

Aromatic compounds having an alkyl group with at least 3 carbon atoms are produced in a process comprising at least one of the following steps: (1) a step of contacting a starting material that contains an aromatic compound having a branched alkyl group with at least 3 carbon atoms, with a zeolite-containing catalyst in a liquid phase in the presence of hydrogen therein, thereby changing the position of the carbon atoms of the alkyl group bonding to the aromatic ring of the compound; (2) a step of contacting a starting material that contains an aromatic compound having a branched alkyl group with at least 3 carbon atoms, with a catalyst containing zeolite and containing rhenium and/or silver, in a liquid phase, thereby changing the position of the carbon atoms of, the alkyl group bonding to the aromatic ring of the compound; (3) a step of contacting a halogenated aromatic compound having an alkyl group with at least 3 carbon atoms, with an acid-type catalyst, thereby isomerizing the compound; (4) a step of treating a mixture of isomers of an aromatic compound having an alkyl group with at least 3 carbon atoms, with a zeolite adsorbent that contains at least one exchangable cation selected from alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, lead, thallium and silver, thereby separating a specific isomer from the isomer mixture through adsorption.

A process for improving the fluidity of hydrocarbon fractions by dewaxing thereof. In the present process, hydrocarbon fractions are contacted with hydrogen in the presence of a specific type of catalyst, thereby lowering the pour point of the hydrocarbon fraction. The catalyst comprises a specific type of zeolite which is defined by a specific X-ray diffraction pattern and which has a predetermined range of mesitylene adsorption of not less than 1.6 wt %. The zeolite catalyst is obtained by providing an aqueous reaction mixture of SiO.sub.2, Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, an alkaline source as OH.sup.-, and a carboxyl group-containing organic compound having the following composition:______________________________________ SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 20-60 H.sub.2 O/SiO.sub.2 5-100 OH.sup.- /SiO.sub.2 0.1-0.35 ______________________________________ and reacting the mixture until crystals are produced. Advantageously, the ratio of the carboxyl group-containing organic compound to aluminum oxide is about 1.0 to 100.
