A spread signal is produced having an adjustable spread spectrum. A data signal is provided for transmission. The data signal is processed to have a first spread spectrum. The processed first spread spectrum data signal is filtered to have one out of a plurality of spread spectrums. The filtering capable of producing a signal having a spread spectrum of any of the plurality of spread spectrums. The filtered one spread spectrum data signal is transmitted.

A base station for controlling transmission power during the establishment of a communication channel utilizes the reception of a short code during initial power ramp-up. The short code is a sequence for detection by the base station which has a much shorter period than a conventional access code. The ramp-up starts from a power level that is lower than the required power level for detection by the base station. The power of the short code is quickly increased until the signal is detected by the base station. Once the base station detects the short code, it transmits an indication that the short code has been detected.

A modem is configured for demodulating a communication signal associated with a unique code-division multiple access (CDMA) code. The modem includes an adaptive matched filter and a vector correlator. The vector correlator generates filter coefficients for the adaptive matched filter based on signal distortion determined by the vector correlator. The vector correlator has a processing capacity of at least eleven chips whereby the vector correlator compensates for a known phase distortion and for multipath distortion ascertainable within its processing capacity. The adaptive matched filter processes communication signals with the unique CDMA code using coefficients generated by the vector correlator.

A system and method for adaptive power control of a spread spectrum transmitter of a mobile unit operating in a cellular-communications network having a plurality of mobile units in communication with a base station. In response to a received signal from the mobile unit, the received signal having a first spread-spectrum signal and an interfering signal, an automatic gain control (AGC) circuit within the base station generates an AGC-output signal which is despread by a base despreader and then processed as a received-power level. A power command signal is generated using a threshold test and the received-power level. The power command signal is transmitted to the mobile station as a second spread-spectrum signal. The mobile station despreader despreads the second spread-spectrum signal as a power adjust signal and, responsive to the power adjust signal, increases or decreases the power level of the first spread spectrum signal.
Abstract:
A CDMA subscriber unit includes an antenna system having multiple antennas and delay units for receiving a transmitted signal and outputting a combined signal having a known distortion imparted by the antenna system. The combined signal is in turn processed by a modem, which compensates for the known distortion in a manner which provides improved signal gain. The improved signal gain permits a reduction in transmit power and, accordingly, increased capacity of the base station. Where the antenna system is to be remotely located from related signal processing equipment, separate units for the RF receiver/transmitter and the other signal processing equipment are provided so that the RF receiver/transmitter may also be remotely located along with the antenna system.
