摘要: A method of treating a disease involving surfactant deficiency or dysfunction in a patient's lungs is disclosed comprising the steps of providing a liquid lung surfactant composition; aerosolizing the lung surfactant composition with a vibrating aperture-type aerosol generator to form a surfactant aerosol; and introducing the surfactant aerosol into the gas flow within a circuit of a pressure-assisted breathing system coupled to the patient's respiratory system, whereby a therapeutically effective amount of said surfactant is delivered to the patient's lungs. Apparatus is also disclosed that increases the efficiency of delivery of aerosolized medicaments such as aerosolized lung surfactant.

摘要: A chiller for supplying chilled fluid for cooling a room includes two distinct power inputs. A critical power input is configured to supply power to a controller and to a pump in a chilled-fluid loop that circulates a cool working fluid through an air handler 34 to cool the air in the air handler. A non-critical power input is configured to supply power to a compressor and, possibly, other elements of a refrigeration loop that includes an evaporator, the compressor, and a condenser to provide refrigeration via an evaporation/condensation cycle. When power is lost to the non-critical power input, the critical power input can continue to independently power the circulation of the working fluid through the chilled-fluid loop to continue to provide a level of cooling in the air handler.

摘要: Methods and devices are provided for aerosolizing medicament to be inhaled by a user. A housing is provided with an aerosol generator contained within the housing. A medicament feed system supplies medicament to the aerosol generator. A mouthpiece has separate medicament and air flow passages. The medicament flow passage provides aerosolized medicament from the aerosol generator to an outlet of the medicament flow passage, and the air flow passage has an inlet in fluid communication with an ambient atmosphere. The outlets of the medicament and air flow passages are provided at an end of the mouthpiece to provide simultaneous flows of medicament and air that mix in the user's mouth upon inhalation by the user at the end of the mouthpiece.

摘要: A current is injected in the vicinity of a liquid-containment facility of interest to create a measurable electrical potential field in the ground underlying the site. Voltage is measured at each of a plurality of electrodes and plotted as a function of time. The rate of change of the voltages measured at each electrode was found to be proportional to the flow rate of any leak from the facility. Accordingly, the monitoring system is calibrated with artificially imposed leaks flowing at various rates and the resulting information is used to estimate the flow rate of actual leaks on the basis of the slope of the potential plot recorded by any given electrode over time. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the flow rates so calculated are averaged to produce an estimate of the rate of leakage.
