Abstract:
An electronic service reminder to automatically notify a user as to when and what type of maintenance should be performed on the garage door operator, based on a variety of factors, including time, materials and operating environment. The garage door operator is configured to automatically generate an electronic service reminder in the form of an audible or visual alert based on one or more operating parameters of the garage door operator meeting or exceeding a predefined threshold. The predefined threshold is variable based on the values of the operating parameters.
Abstract:
A rolling code transmitter is useful in a security system for providing secure encrypted RF transmission comprising an interleaved trinary bit fixed code and rolling code. To provide even greater security, the transmitter is limited in the number of times it may perform a resynchronization procedure. A receiver demodulates the encrypted RF transmission and recovers the fixed code and rolling code. Upon comparison of the fixed and rolling codes with stored codes and determining that the signal has emanated from an authorized transmitter, a signal is generated to actuate an electric motor to open or close a movable barrier.
Abstract:
A system includes a wireless speech transmission device that communicates a wireless transmission of speech representing data in a first protocol via a wireless network. The speech representing data conveys substantially noise-free human speech. A wireless speech communication device receives the speech representing data in the first protocol via the network and couples representations of the data to a speech communication apparatus in a second protocol. A moveable barrier operator is within receiving range of the wireless transmission of the data from the wireless speech transmission device, intercepts the wireless transmission from the wireless speech transmission device, and recognizes a speech pattern from the data in the wireless transmission. A barrier movement apparatus actuates the barrier based upon the speech pattern.

Abstract:
Movement of a movable barrier (10) such as, for example, a vertically-dropping fire door, can be controlled in an informed manner and with greater flexibility regarding the manner of movement via, in one embodiment, use of a motor (20) as a generator to resist the downward movement of the barrier. One or more dummy electrical loads (22) can be used in combination with the generator mode of operation to influence the degree of braking proffered by the motor. In various embodiments, one or more sensors (25, 26, 27) can be used to detect local and remote conditions of interest to thereby at least partially inform the barrier movement decision process. A display (90) (or displays) can serve to provide various kinds of information to authorized personnel and an operator control (120) can serve, at least under some operating circumstances, to permit a person to locally cause a closed barrier to move to at least a partially opened position.
Abstract:
Ternary data as corresponds to a movable barrier operator is provided (21) and converted (22) into corresponding binary information. In a preferred approach this comprises converting each ternary trit into a corresponding binary pair. Pursuant to a preferred approach binary bits as correspond to, for example, fixed and/or non-fixed information (32 and 33) are provided (31) and then converted (34) into the aforementioned ternary data.
Abstract:
A movable barrier operator includes an absolute position detector which provides a unique value for each position of the barrier along its path of travel. The absolute position detector employs multiple binary serial streams and one multiple clock stream. After the first five cycles of the clock stream, the binary streams can be decoded by a processor to produce an absolute position. Every clock edge produces a new absolute position along the path of travel.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling a barrier movement operator comprising a controller that dynamically controls barrier operator braking to electronically slow, stop or reverse the motor in the barrier operator controller. The apparatus includes a source of electrical power for providing the necessary power to operate the apparatus, a converter for supplying power to a DC motor, and a controller for enabling dynamic braking of the movable barrier operator using electronic braking of the electric motor. The dynamic braking of the motor gradually slows movement of the barrier operator, thereby reducing forces acting on the motor and on the barrier.
Abstract:
A garage door opening and closing apparatus having improved operational safety includes a control circuit which responds to a number of input stimuli to generate commands to open and close a garage door as well as to stop garage door movement. Three relays respond to the commands via drive circuitry to actually connect door operating voltages to the windings of a door controlling motor. By redundancies in the operation of the three relays, faults in the operation of those relays result in safe door operating conditions. Additionally, the control circuitry upon issuing a door stop command, performs a test to determine whether or not the door is still moving. If the door is still moving, door up commands are generated by the control circuitry to place the door in a safe position.
