Abstract: Provided is an in-store dual-mode communication system in which shelves are disposed within a commercial space. A server is coupled to the Internet and/or a wide-area network and is configured to send and receive communications. Also provided are light-based messaging units that are located on and/or attached to such shelves, each: 1) having a light source, 2) receiving a communication from the server, and 3) in response to receipt of such communication, turning the light source on and off so as to broadcast a digital message that was included within such communication, as a binary-encoded digital signal corresponding to on/off states of the light source. A user device: (i) receives, via its light sensor, and then decodes the binary-encoded digital signal from a light-based messaging unit in order to obtain the digital message that corresponds to it; and also (ii) communicates with the server via its wireless interface.

Abstract: A memory life extension system and method is provided for managing operation of rewritable memory used to store a monotonically increasing sequence of multiple-byte binary values in a set of one or more memory locations in the rewritable memory. A first value is read in from a set of one or more memory locations. On detection of an instruction to store an incremented value, the incremented value is permuted by applying an encoding, in which a value of a least significant bit changes only on every second increment, to two least significant bits of the incremented value. On overflow of a least significant byte as a result of the increment, a cyclic byte-wise shift is applied to the incremented value. The permuted incremented value is then stored in the one or more memory locations.

Abstract: A wireless communication system for a vehicle has a portable device that transmits a wireless signal and a vehicle-mounted device that receives the wireless signal from the portable device. Each time a switch in the portable device is turned on, the portable device updates a portable device rolling code and transmits a wireless signal including the portable device rolling code. Abstract: A rolling code transmitter is useful in a security system for providing secure encrypted RF transmission comprising an interleaved trinary bit fixed code and rolling code. To provide even greater security, the transmitter is limited in the number of times it may perform a resynchronization procedure. A receiver demodulates the encrypted RF transmission and recovers the fixed code and rolling code. Upon comparison of the fixed and rolling codes with stored codes and determining that the signal has emanated from an authorized transmitter, a signal is generated to actuate an electric motor to open or close a movable barrier.

Abstract: An all-trinary rolling code method and system which allow a barrier opener to generate and transmit trinary rolling codes without entering or storing any rolling code values as binary words includes obtaining a stored trinary counter value upon a transmitter being actuated to remotely control a barrier.
