Abstract:
A composite article and its method of manufacture are disclosed. The composite article includes a matrix formed of a mixture of glass particles and a cured polymer, and a layer of cured polymer material that is substantially free of the glass particles, said layer being formed on at least one surface of the cast article whereby the glass particles are not surface exposed on the at least one surface.
Abstract:
A method for joining components comprises locating a region, such as an end region 24, of a shape memory alloy (SMA) material component 10 adjacent to a further component 12, and generating localised plastic deformation of the aforesaid region to create a joint between the components 10, 12. The localised plastic deformation of the shape memory alloy material component 10 is preferably generated by applying a shock load to the shape memory alloy material component 10.
Abstract:
A method and a system (10) for exhausting gas via a nozzle (19, 21) of a gas turbine engine, for example. The system (10) comprises a nozzle (19, 21) comprising a nozzle body portion (32, 33, 74) defining a nozzle exit (42, 43), characterised in that the nozzle body portion (32, 33, 74) comprises fluid injection means (60), positioned upstream of the exit (42, 43) relative to a fluid flow (F1, F2) created by the operation of the system, for injecting fluid (68) upstream of the exit (42, 43).
Abstract:
A seal (40) provides sealing between two pressure zones (60, 62) and a rotating and non-rotating member (42, 52) by providing a first sealing member (46) between two seal lands (48, 50). A second seal (64) is mounted between the non-rotating member (52, 58) and one of the seal lands (50, 66) so as to control pressure around the seal lands (48, 50).
Abstract:
An anchorless boat positioning system for establishing and maintaining a boat at a selected geographic location without the use of a conventional anchor. In one embodiment, a steerable thruster is used whose thrust and steering direction are determined and controlled on the basis of position information signals received from global positioning system (GPS) satellites, relative steering angle between the boat and the thruster and boat heading indication signals from a magnetic compass. The system continuously monitors the position and heading of the boat and compares it with the stored coordinates of the selected anchoring location(s) to generate control signals for the steerable motor. Several modes of operation are disclosed and Euler transformations for offset antenna placement for error reduction are taught. Proportional, integral, and derivative control (PID) of four constants of vessel control is also provided. Multiple thrusters in various arrangements are also provided to control either the orientation of the boat or a second point of interest on the boat at a second geographic location.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method for producing agglomerates from a feedstock comprising at least one biomass stream, the method comprising the steps of: combining the feedstock with one or more binding reagents; and introducing the feedstock into an agglomeration apparatus in the presence of a polymerisation activator to produce the agglomerates.
Abstract:
The present invention provides novel dithiolopyrrolone compounds and their salts, which are useful as treatments for cancer and other proliferative diseases. The present invention also provides therapeutic compositions comprising particularly useful types of dithiolopyrrolones, the salts thereof, and methods of using the compounds within such types, particularly in treating proliferative diseases such as cancer.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for detecting, monitoring, measuring and recording the motion of a patient's spine is disclosed. The apparatus includes a vertical member attached to a belt that fits around the patient's waist. A first sensor for detecting and monitoring flexion and extension of the patient's spine in the midsagittal plane is mounted to the lower end of the vertical member. A second sensor for detecting and monitoring lateral bending and movement of the patient's spine in the frontal plane is mounted to the upper end of the vertical member.
Abstract:
A hemostatic clip for application to body tissue is disclosed which includes opposed leg portions connected by a bail portion with each leg portion having a tissue contacting surface defined thereon. A pair of projections and a pair of recessed areas are defined on each tissue contacting surface and are disposed in an alternating arrangement such that the movement inhibiting structures on one leg portion are in juxtaposed alignment with those on the opposed leg portion.
Abstract:
The invention provides novel 1,2-diphenylethene derivatives and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, the process for production of these compounds and their pharmaceutical composition and the use of these compounds as modulators of T-cells, neutrophils, macrophages and their associated cytokines as agents for treating immune, inflammatory and auto-immune diseases.
