The block copolymer is first selectively hydrogenated and thereafter modified by grafting sulfonic acid containing functional groups primarily in the alkenyl arene blocks. Neutralization of the acid groups to a metal salt is preferred to prepare oil extended blends that retain substantial amounts of non-extended mechanical properties.

Hydrogenated butadiene polymers having terminal functional groups have minimum viscosity at any molecular weight when the 1,2-addition is between 30% and 70% Hydrogenated butadiene polymers having about two terminal hydroxyl groups per molecule have surprisingly lower viscosities at 30% to 70% 1,2-addition than similar polymers having either higher or lower amounts of 1,2-addition. The polymers are useful in making coatings, sealants, binders, and block copolymers with polyesters, polyamides, and polycarbonates.

The present invention concerns an improved process for producing an ionomer from an acid group containing polymer. Production of the ionomer requires neutralization of an acid functionality or reaction of anhydride functional groups with a metal ion source to produce a salt. It has been found that metal hydrocarbyls or metal hydrides can be used as the source of metal ions for neutralizing the acid or anhydride functionalities. The reaction can occur in a solvent or in a melt, but is most preferably performed in a solvent.

Unsaturated hydrocarbon polymers are hydrogenated in the presence of a catalyst obtained by combining a Group VIII-A metal alkoxide or carboxylate and an alkyl or hydride of a metal selected from Groups I-A, II-A and III-B and then functionalized by contacting the hydrogenated polymer with a functionalizing agent before the hydrogenation catalyst is quenched or otherwise deactivated. The hydrogenation is, generally, accomplished at relatively mild conditions to avoid degradation of the polymer and, in the case of unsaturated copolymers comprising aromatic unsaturation, to avoid any significant hydrogenation of the aromatic unsaturation. Generally, the hydrogen partial pressure employed will be below about 1000 psig and the hydrogenation temperature will be below about 125.degree. C. The hydrogenated polymer may be functionalized by reaction with functionalizing agent select from the group carbon dioxide, ethylene oxide, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acid salts and esters, halides, epoxides, sulfur, boron alkoxides, isocyanates, various silicon compounds and the like. Carbon dioxide is a particularly preferred functionalizing agent since the thus functionalized polymer is useful as a modifier in sheet and bulk molding compositions and readily responds to the presence of thickening agents.

A novel process for preparation of block copolymers containing, for example, alpha-methyl-styrene/styrene glassy blocks is claimed, where the glassy blocks contain 25-50 mol % alpha-methyl-styrene and have Tg values in the range of 120 to 140° C. The copolymerization process, which is conducted at 35 to 60° C. and relatively high solids contents and with continuous addition of styrene, results in very high conversions of the alpha-methyl-styrene. Selectively hydrogenated block copolymers having high glassy block Tg values are also disclosed and claimed as well as high service temperature elastomeric compositions comprising the block copolymer and an olefin polymer or copolymer.
