    Abstract: A sensing system of a vehicle includes a control and a mounting carrier that supports a plurality of sensor units. The mounting carrier is configured to be disposed at the vehicle so that the plurality of sensor units have respective fields of sensing exterior of the vehicle. The mounting carrier includes structure to support the sensor units at an exterior structure of the vehicle so as to provide a desired field of sensing. The mounting carrier includes an electrical connector that is configured to electrically connect to an electrical connector of the vehicle. The sensor units are electrically connected to a circuit element that is electrically connected to the electrical connector of the mounting carrier. The control, responsive to outputs of the circuit element, determines the presence of one or more objects exterior the vehicle and within the field of sensing of at least one of the sensor units.

    Abstract: A sensing system for a vehicle includes a plurality of radio frequency (RF) sensor units disposed at the vehicle so as to have respective fields of sensing exterior of the vehicle. Each RF sensor unit includes a system on chip unit comprising a plurality of transmitting antennae and a plurality of receiving antennae, with each transmitting antenna transmitting RF signals and each receiving antenna receiving RF signals transmitted by each transmitting antenna to provide a respective field of sensing of each of the RF sensor units. Outputs of the RF sensor units are communicated to a control and, responsive to the outputs of the RF sensor units, the control determines the presence of one or more objects exterior the vehicle and within the field of sensing of at least one of the RF sensor units.

    Abstract: A vehicular sensing system includes a plurality of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar sensor units disposed at a vehicle so as to have respective fields of sensing exterior of the vehicle. Each MIMO radar sensor unit includes a plurality of transmitting antennas and a plurality of receiving antennas, with each transmitting antenna transmitting radar signals and each receiving antenna receiving radar signals. Outputs of the individual MIMO radar sensor units of the plurality of MIMO radar sensor units are provided to an electronic control unit (ECU) using a communication protocol of the vehicle and, responsive to the outputs of the MIMO radar sensor units, the ECU detects objects present exterior the vehicle. The vehicular sensing system adjusts the total number of transmitting and receiving antennas utilized by the plurality of MIMO radar sensor units in accordance with complexity of a surrounding environment of the vehicle.

    Abstract: A vehicular sensing system includes a control and a mounting carrier that is configured to support a plurality of sensor units at a vehicle so that the plurality of sensor units have respective fields of sensing exterior of the vehicle. The mounting carrier includes an electrical connector that is configured to electrically connect to an electrical connector of the vehicle. The sensor units are electrically connected to the electrical connector of the mounting carrier. The control, responsive to outputs of the sensor units, determines the presence of one or more objects within the field of sensing of at least one of the sensor units, and obtains height data pertaining to the height of the determined object. Responsive at least in part to the obtained height data, the control determines (i) that the determined object comprises a pedestrian, (ii) that the determined object comprises a curb and/or (iii) clearance information.

    Abstract: A vehicular radar sensing system includes a radar sensor disposed at a vehicle. The radar sensor includes a waveguide antenna and a printed circuit board (PCB) with an inboard side and an outboard side. A processor is disposed at the inboard side of the PCB and the waveguide antenna is disposed at the outboard side of the PCB. The waveguide antenna is partially disposed within a cavity at the outboard side of the PCB. Radio frequency signals are electrically communicated between the processor and the waveguide antenna through only a portion of the PCB. The waveguide antenna (i) guides the transmitted radio signals from the transmitter to the exterior environment and (ii) guides reflected radio signals from the exterior environment to the receiver.

    Abstract: A method for anticipating a lane change by another vehicle ahead of a vehicle equipped with a sensing system having a camera and a radar sensor includes processing captured image data to determine lane markers of a traffic lane along which the equipped vehicle is traveling, and to determine presence of another vehicle in an adjacent traffic lane. Responsive to processing of captured radar data, an oblique angle of a direction of travel of the other vehicle relative to the traffic lane is determined. Responsive to determination that the oblique angle of the direction of travel of the other vehicle is indicative of a cut-in intent of the other vehicle, and based on the determined range to the determined other vehicle, the system anticipates the cut-in of the other vehicle and applies a braking system of the equipped vehicle to mitigate collision with the determined other vehicle.

    Abstract: A sensing system for a vehicle includes at least one radar sensor disposed at the vehicle and having a field of sensing exterior of the vehicle. The at least one radar sensor includes an antenna array having multiple transmitting antennas and multiple receiving antennas. Sensed radar data provides a data set of radar reflection responses for an object in the field of sensing of the at least one radar sensor, and the data set of radar reflection responses is compared to stored data sets representative of particular vehicle types. Responsive to the data set of radar reflection responses being determined to correspond to a stored data set, the sensing system classifies the detected object as that particular vehicle type.
