A rotation preventing/thrust bearing device for an orbiting member of a fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The rotation preventing/thrust bearing device includes a discrete fixed portion, a discrete orbital portion and bearing elements. The fixed and orbital portions each include an annular race and a ring which covers the end surface of the race. Both rings have a plurality of holes or pockets in an axial direction. The radius of the fixed pockets is greater than the radius of the orbital pockets. The bearing elements, one of which is placed between each opposing pair of pockets, roll at radius R1 with regard to the fixed race and roll at radius R2 with regard to the orbital race. The sum of rolling radii R1 and R2 is substantially equal to the radius of the orbiting member. Rotation of the orbiting member is thereby prevented by the bearing elements which interact with the edges of the opposing pairs of pockets and the bearing elements carry axial thrust load from the orbiting member to the fixed race. By setting radius R2 smaller than radius R1, while maintaining the sum of these radii substantially equal to the orbit radius, the size and weight of the orbital race and the orbital ring can be reduced, which in turn reduces the overall weight of the orbital member of the fluid displacement apparatus. A reduction in the weight of the orbital member simplifies the construction of the apparatus by reducing the size of balance weights.

A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed. The apparatus includes a housing. A fixed scroll member is fixedly disposed within the housing and comprises a first end plate means from which a first wrap means extends. An orbiting scroll member comprises a second end plate means from which a second wrap means extends, and is supported for orbiting motion within the housing. Both wrap means interfit at an angular and radial offset to make a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of symmetrically disposed, sealed off fluid pockets. The first end plate means is formed with two holes which are placed at symmetrical positions to be simultaneously closed by the axial end surface of the second wrap means. These two holes are connected to one another by a passage means. The pressure in the sealed off fluid pockets is thereby equalized at the time the pockets are sealed.

A scroll type fluid displacement apparatus is disclosed which includes a pair of scrolls each having a circular end plate and spiral element extending therefrom. The scrolls are maintained at an angular and radial offset so that both spiral elements interfit to form a plurality of line contacts to define at least one pair of sealed off fluid pockets. Upon relative orbital motion of the scrolls, the line contacts shift along the spiral curved surfaces of the spiral elements to thereby change the volume of the fluid pockets. In particular, according to the present invention, the thickness of the spiral element of the orbiting scroll is gradually from the inner end of the spiral element to its outer end to increase the mechanical strength of the spiral element at its central portion while avoiding an increase in the centrifugal force generated by the orbiting scroll during orbital motion. On the other hand, the thickness of the spiral element of the other scroll, i.e., the fixed scroll, is gradually increased from the inner end of the spiral element to its outer end to compensate for the change in shape of the facing spiral element of the orbiting scroll.

The unit includes a housing, a pair of scroll members which are comprised of an end plate and a spiral wrap extending from one surface of the end plate. Both wraps interfit to make a plurality of line contacts between their spiral curved surfaces. A driving mechanism and a rotation preventing mechanism are connected to one of the scroll members to effect relative orbital motion while rotation of the scroll member is prevented. A turning mechanism is associated with one of the scroll members to selectively turn the scroll member and vary the angular offset between the wraps, whereby the compressive effect of the scroll members can be controlled independently of the operation of the driving mechanism.

The bushing has an eccentric hole disposed eccentrically with respect to the center of the bushing, and the drive pin is inserted in the eccentric hole. A restriction device restricts the swing angle of the bushing and is coupled between the drive shaft and the bushing. The restriction device includes a spring to push the orbiting fluid displacement member in the direction to reduce the orbital radius of the orbiting member. The line contacts between fixed member and orbiting member are thereby separated until the orbiting member reaches a predetermined desired rotational frequency. The compressor thus starts up in an unloaded condition.

This construction prevents abnormal wear of the spiral wrap and the opposite end plate which might otherwise occur during axial slant of the orbiting scroll, or which might be caused by non-parallelism of the scroll end plates, without compromising the important sealing of the central high pressure space.

The tool includes a working member having an end plate and a first involute element extending from one end surface of said end plate. A cutting edge extends along the inner side wall of an axial end of the first involute, and the end plate has a plurality of arc shaped holes along the outer side wall of the first involute element. A second involute element is rotatably coupled to the working member and interfits with the first involute element in a disposition to define a radial gap between the first and second involute elements. A cutting edge extends along the outer side wall of a first axial end of the second involute. A plurality of pins project axially from the other axial end of the second involute element and penetrate through the arc shaped holes. A rotatable member has a plurality of holes extending in the axial direction. The pins have axial end portions which extend into the holes in the rotatable member to couple the rotatable member to the second involute member and to transmit the rotation of the rotatable member to the second involute element so that the relative rotation between the first and second involute elements adjusts the gap between them.

The separated oil is accumulated in an accumulating zone in the discharge chamber and returns to the crank chamber through an oil flowing passageway which communicates between the accumulating zone and the crank chamber thereby to reduce the oil leakage into the refrigerant circulating system.
