Abstract: Heat exchanger. The heat exchanger includes a thermal contact plate defining a cavity in fluid communication with a first pipe and a plurality of stationary elements substantially perpendicular to the first pipe each defining a cavity wherein each cavity is in fluid communication with the first pipe and at least one cavity includes a wick. A plurality of movable elements are provided wherein the movable elements and the stationary elements are substantially parallel, alternatingly arranged and a portion of the movable elements overlaps a portion of the stationary elements. A working fluid is provided in the first pipe and cavities or stationary elements and thermal contact plate.

Abstract: A polarization control device for a lithography system selectively polarizes light in horizontal, vertical and/or circular orientations. A pair of relatively rotatable quarter-wave plates move to provide the desired polarization. When the quarter-wave plates are at a relative angle of 45 degrees, the polarization is circular. When the quarter-wave plates are both at zero or 45 degrees, the resulting polarization is vertical or horizontal. The polarization is selected based on the orientation of an image to be projected. Horizontal polarization is preferably used for images with a strong horizontal orientation, and vertical polarization is selected for images with a strong vertical orientation. Circular orientation is selected when the image has no strong horizontal or vertical orientation.

Abstract: A stove top cover includes a top surface and a bottom surface and forming a cutout extending there through and having a periphery that defines the cutout. Still further, the stove top cover can include a flange or a series of flanges formed on the top surface that extends around the periphery of the cutout and projects outwardly from the top surface to a height and extends inwardly a distance toward and over an edge of a burner of the stove top. By using a nonflammable material (i.e., silicone, polyvinyl fluoride or PTFE-coated fiberglass) and overlapping the flange over the periphery of the burner, any contents that may overflow a pot or pan placed on the burner is entirely diverted onto the surface of the cover. With the cover, being easier to clean than the stove top, or even disposable, stove top cleaning is reduced or mitigated.

Abstract: An apparatus having a heat transfer surface for transfer of heat from the apparatus to a liquid. The heat transfer surface includes at least two different materials and at least two of said materials have different thermal conductivities. A method of boiling at least one liquid which provides increased heat transfer from a heat transfer surface of an apparatus to a liquid comprising a step of boiling said liquid in contact with the apparatus, is also disclosed. Also described is a method of tuning a heat transfer surface by forming the heat transfer surface using at least two different materials having different thermal conductivities arranged in a predetermined spatial relationship including a spacing between the portions of one said material that is from about 0.1λC to about 5λC, wherein λC is a capillary length of a bubble of a predetermined liquid to be boiled using said heat transfer surface.

In some embodiments, thermally actuated valves are provided, comprising: a first material defining at least one opening; and a beam attached to the first material so as to at least partially cover the at least one opening, wherein the first material and the beam comprise different thermal expansion properties, such that, when a temperature is applied to at least one of the first material and the beam, the beam buckles so as to at least partially uncover the at least one opening. In some embodiments, photovoltaic cells and arrays comprising thermally actuated valves, and methods for producing thermally actuated valves are provided.
