摘要: A method and apparatus for protecting an electronic implantable medical device prior to it being implanted in a patient's body. The apparatus affords protection against electronic component damage due to electrostatic discharge and/or physical damage due to improper handling. The apparatus is comprised of a circuit board having a conductive surface for receiving and releasably grasping the electrodes of the medical device to support the device's housing proximate to the surface of the circuit board. Two conductive paths are formed on the circuit board extending between two conductive surfaces for shunting electrostatic discharge currents to prevent such currents from passing through the device's electronic circuitry. The conductive paths include oppositely oriented diodes, preferably comprising diodes which emit light (i.e., LEDs) when current passes therethrough. Additionally, an external monitor/generator is provided to enable functional testing of the medical device.

The apparatus affords protection against electronic component damage due to electrostatic discharge and/or physical damage due to improper handling. The apparatus is comprised of a circuit board having conductive surface means for receiving and releasably grasping the electrodes of the medical device to support the device's housing proximate to the surface of the circuit board. First and second conductive paths are formed on the circuit board extending between the first and second conductive surfaces for shunting electrostatic discharge currents to prevent such currents from passing through the device's electronic circuitry. The respective shunt paths include oppositely oriented diodes, preferably comprising diodes which emit light (i.e., LEDs) when current passes therethrough. Additionally, means are provided to enable functional testing of the medical device.

摘要: An apparatus and packaging method for stacking a plurality of integrated circuit substrates, i.e., substrates having integrated circuits formed as integral portions of the substrates, which provides interconnection paths through the substrates to simplify electrical connections between the integrated circuits while facilitating minimization of the volume and customization of the three dimensional package size to conform to the available internal space within a housing, e.g., one used in an implantabie device where package volume is at a premium. Furthermore, an internal cavity can be created by the stacked formation that is suitable for mounting of a surface mount device, e.g., a crystal or the like.

摘要: An apparatus for treating an infection which may occur in the biofilm which surrounds an implanted cardiac stimulation device, e.g., a cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) or pacemaker. Such infections are relatively untreatable by conventional antibiotics treatments. Thus, explanting of the implanted devices may be required. Accordingly, the present apparatus provides an electrical treatment that enables a biocide, i.e., an antibiotic, to successfully treat the infection within the biofilm and thus avoid the necessity to explant the device. Furthermore, the present invention provides this electrical treatment in a manner to not interfere with the stimulation pulses of the cardiac stimulation device by alternatively delivering current pulses during atrial and ventricular refractory periods or a high frequency square wave at a frequency that exceeds the frequency response of the heart muscle.

摘要: An improved system and method for performing automatic capture/threshold detection in an implantable cardiac stimulation device or any device capable of stimulating some organ or tissue in the body. Prior art systems determine the stimulation threshold of the cardiac tissue by detecting an evoked response to a fixed duration stimulation pulse and then increasing the amplitude of the stimulation pulse by a predetermined safety margin value. Such systems are inherently based upon a belief that the chronaxie of the strength-duration curve for a particular patient is essentially fixed and that the rheobase is variable. While this may be true at some times during the patient's life, e.g., during the acute phase after lead implantation absent drug effects, it is reported that drugs alone may alter the chronaxie and it is believed that other factors may also affect the chronaxie either alone or in combination with the rheobase.

摘要: A system and method that minimizes plaque accumulation on a stent and thereby restenosis that could require a subsequent invasive medical procedure following implantation of the stent in a patient. A plurality of electrically-powered, biocompatible devices, implantable via injection, are positioned within the patient proximate to the stent and under control of a externally-placed controller are commanded to emit ultrasonic waves corresponding to the mechanical resonance of the stent. By controlling the frequency and the relative phases of the ultrasonic waves, the accumulation of plaque on the stent can thus be minimized.

摘要: A system and method that provide a prophylactic treatment to a person, e.g., a patient, to avoid the occurrence of pulmonary embolisms by the system providing neuromuscular stimulation to a person's lower extremities, e.g., the person's legs, when the system senses that a person has been immobile for an extended period of time. An implantable neuromuscular pacer, such as that described in U.S. Pat. Nos. 5,193,539; 5,193,540; 6,164,284; 6,185,452; 6,208,894; 6,315,721; 6,564,807; and their progeny, may be used to provide to selectively provide such stimulation. Preferably, such a device may be battery powered so that it can operate independent of an external apparatus. In particular, systems and devices of the present invention preferably additionally include an activity monitor, e.g., an accelerometer or the like, that disables or limits stimulation to pronged time periods in which there is limited activity.
