    摘要: Digital data bits are stored at storage locations at plural depths within a holographic storage medium as selective, localized alterations in a format hologram. Micro-localized regions of a reflection format hologram extending throughout the medium are deleted by focusing a high-power laser beam at desired storage locations. The deletion regions have a lower reflectivity than the surrounding parts of the format hologram. Tunable-focus storage and retrieval heads, as well as dynamic aberration compensators, are used for multi-depth access. Storage and retrieval may each be achieved with a single head.

    摘要: An apparatus for monitoring an input optical signal at a plurality of distinct optical frequencies is disclosed wherein a demultiplexing arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) having a plurality of M>1 Vernier input ports is disposed between an optical switch and a photodiode array coupled to the output ports of the AWG. In operation, the optical switch sequentially provides the input optical signal into each of the Vernier ports, and signals detected by photodiodes are stored in a memory unit. The apparatus is capable of monitoring the input optical signal with a frequency step which is M times smaller than a frequency spacing between the AWG transmission bands, and obtain M frequency-resolved readings from each photodiode.

    摘要: A diffraction-compensated WDM (wavelength division multiplexer) uses TTFs (thin film filters) as concave mirrors. The WDM has a plurality of filter elements for guiding the optical signal along a predetermined optical path, each filter element being transparent to a predetermined wavelength range and including compensating means for at least partially compensating for diffraction of the optical signal. Each filter element has a thin film coated on a substrate, and the compensating means is a curved surface of each thin film. The WDM is more robust than prior art WDM devices using flat TTFs.

A pinhole is disposed in the path of the return read beam after the birefringent plate and in close proximity to first and second focal planes. A polarizing beam splitter is positioned after the second focal plane and serves to split the return read beam into two light beams of first and second polarization. First and second detectors are disposed in the path of corresponding first and second polarization light beams. The detectors are connected to the inputs of an electrical differencing circuit that has an output to an optical head servo system.

A method for focus error signal generation includes the steps of focussing the read light beam at a point of focus within a focal plane; providing for first and second polarizers of corresponding first and second polarization having corresponding pinholes formed therein, wherein first and second polarizers are disposed sequentially in the path of the read light beam; providing for a polarizing beam splitter disposed in the path of the read light beam after the second polarizer that splits the read light beam into first and second light beams of corresponding first and second polarizations; providing for first and second detectors disposed in the path of corresponding first and second light beams; and generating a focus error signal related to the difference between the output of the first detector and the output of the second detector.
