An engine exhaust gas recirculation system has an E.G.R. passage for recirculating exhaust gases from an exhaust system of an engine back into an intake system thereof downstream of a throttle valve. The E.G.R. passage has a restriction orifice therein and an E.G.R. control valve responsive to a vacuum signal to control the recirculation of exhaust gases through the E.G.R. passage. A pressure comparator and modulator is pneumatically connected to the E.G.R. passage upstream and downstream of the restriction orifice, to the carburetor venturi, to the intake manifold and to the E.G.R. control valve and operative to compare the venturi vacuum with the exhaust gas pressure difference across the restriction orifice thereby to modulate the intake manifold vacuum to be fed to the E.G.R. control valve so that the latter is controlled by the thus modulated vacuum to keep the exhaust gas pressure difference proportional to the venturi vacuum whereby the volumetric quantity of recirculated exhaust gases is made proportional to the volumetric quantity of engine intake air.

Each sensing cell (R) is changeable in resistance with a change in a load to be applied. The detecting device (1) comprises a detecting circuit (Rp) and voltage applying means (5). The detecting circuit (Rp) detects a signal through a conversion of changes in the resistance to changes in voltage. When detecting a sensing cell (R11) connected to a specified line path (2a), the voltage applying means (5) applies a particular voltage to the remaining line paths (2a). The particular voltage is for example voltage of which potential is the same as a voltage detected from the selected sensing cell (R11). Applying the particular voltage prevents current from bypassing the other line paths irrelevant to the detection.

A device for the detection of ignition misfire in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A pressure detector detects changes in the combustion pressure of the engine, and a timing detector calculates a reference angular position of the engine. An ignition/misfire detection unit detects occurrences of ignition/misfire. The detection unit compares the output of the pressure detector with predetermined positive and negative reference voltages, and produces signals when these thresholds are passed. The period of a signal produced from the point of positive value detection to the negative value detection is counted and another period which is double the period from the generation of the positive value to the signal from the timing detector unit is counted. These two signals are then compared against one another, using a predetermined program, to detect if ignition or misfire has occurred in the internal combustion engine. A sample and hold circuit may also delay the value obtained by the pressure detector, if necessary.

An ignition range detector for an internal combustion engine is disclosed, in which at each combustion of the internal combustion engine, a pressure signal of a pressure sensor for detecting the pressure in a cylinder is integrated by a signal associated with the crank angle to produce an area S.sub.1 +S.sub.2 presenting the combustion state. At the same time, the pressure signal for a hypothetical case of misfire under the same condition is integrated to produce an area S.sub.1. It is decided whether the ratio (S.sub.1 +S.sub.2)/S.sub.1 is higher than a predetermined value .alpha. or not thereby to detect an ignition range always stably regardless of the operating conditions of the internal combustion engine including the load thereon.
