A particulate filter regeneration system for an internal combustion engine includes a plurality of combustion cylinders, an intake manifold and an exhaust manifold. The particulate filter regeneration system includes a particulate filter adapted for communication with the exhaust manifold, a flame heater adapted for communication with the intake manifold, and a temperature indicator for providing an indication of a temperature associated with the exhaust manifold. A controller is coupled with the temperature indicator and the flame heater. The controller actuates the flame heater dependent upon a particulate filter regeneration indicator and a signal from the temperature indicator indicating a temperature of less than approximately 300° C.

In an internal combustion engine with a combustion heater for elevating a temperature of an engine related element, an object of the present invention is to provide a technique that may effectively performs temperature elevation of an exhaust gas purifying device. In order to attain this object, according to the present invention, the internal combustion engine having an exhaust gas purifying catalyst provided in an exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, and a combustion heater comprising a combustion chamber and a heat exchange portion for transmitting to an engine related element heat held by burnt gas that has been burnt in said combustion chamber, characterized by including a first burnt gas discharging portion for discharging from the combustion heater the burnt gas which has passed through the heat exhcange portion, a second burnt gas discharging portion for discharging from the combustion heater the burnt gas which has not yet passed through the heat exchange portion, and a burnt gas passage controlling unit for supplying at least one of burnt gas discharged by the first burnt gas discharging portion and burnt gas discharged by the second burnt gas discharging portion to the exhaust gas purifying catalyst.

A method of operating a diesel engine assembly having a combustion chamber is disclosed. The method includes the step of determining a desired level of NO.sub.x for exhaust gases exiting the combustion chamber and generating a fuel control signal in response thereto. The method further includes the steps of injecting an amount of combustor fuel into a combustor based on the fuel control signal and combusting the amount of combustor fuel in the combustor so as to produce combustion products. The method yet further includes the steps of advancing the combustion products into the combustion chamber during an intake stoke of the diesel engine and injecting diesel fuel with a fuel injector into the combustion chamber while the combustion products are located in the combustion chamber during a compression stroke. The method still further includes the step of combusting a mixture of the diesel fuel and the combustion products so as to produce exhaust gases during a power stroke. An engine assembly is also disclosed.

A burner system for cleaning exhaust gases in the exhaust line of an internal combustion engine during start-up of the engine. The burner system serves to heat the catalytic convertor during start-up. The burner system has a burner including a combustion chamber for supplying combustion gases to the catalytic converter. A fuel line connected to the fuel injection system of the engine supplies fuel to the burner and a fuel regulator is provided in the fuel line. A secondary sir supply system supplies secondary air to the burner and includes an air fan, an air line connecting the air fan to the burner and a pressure regulator in the air line. The pressure regulator is subjected to the pressure prevailing in the combustion chamber or in the exhaust line for the exhaust gases of the internal combustion engine.

A heater apparatus adapted to be used as an auxiliary unit to the main heater system of a vehicle jointly heats the vehicle engine to operating temperature and heats the fuel line while the engine is inactive. The heater apparatus includes improvements for reducing heat dissipation, providing easy accessibility to the burner assembly, and for automatic ignition of the heating element. In addition, the heater operates directly from the vehicle fuel supply thereby eliminating the need for carrying any auxiliary fuel supply for the heater.
