Abstract:
A method and system for a partitioned computer system includes the establishment of a computer system where each partition is given an economic value determined by the value of the task to be performed and the processing power assigned to perform the task. The sum of all partitions within the system establishes a fixed economic value for the partitioned system. Billing for utilized processor performance within each partition may be performed in relation to rates established for each partition. Each partition may be assigned a metering key which enables metering and reporting of the processor performance utilization of each partition. Billing reports for each partition may be generated and sent via electronic mail along with a digital signature for each partition to a central billing authority for processing.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a contactless and batteryless chip card having an antenna coil, a transmission and reception stage which via an electromagnetic alternating field generated by a write/read unit on the one hand supplies the chip card with energy and on the other hand ensures bidirectional data transmission to the write/read unit. The chip card in accordance with the invention has a detector for determining the field strength of the electromagnetic alternating field transmitting energy to said chip card. The functions of the user part, which have a high energy requirement to implement them, are only implemented advantageously when the detector has detected a sufficient field strength. This prevents defective or incomplete implementation of energy-consuming functions of the chip card before they are begun. The field strength detector consists of a switch and load in parallel to the coil with the switch controlled by a control circuit to cause the switch to be on only during a measurement cycle. By having the switch on only during the measurement cycle damping of the coil is prevented and the range of the card is extended compared to a card where the load is always in parallel to the coil. The control circuit can also monitor the supply voltage and prevent the measurement cycle if the supply voltage drops below a predetermined value. Such interruption in the measurement cycle prevents the measurement from reducing the supply of energy to the rest of the circuits.

The present invention includes a novel polyol prepolmer including an aliphatic amine, aromatic amine, or a mixture of both aliphatic and aromatic amines with an epoxy functional silicone to produce the novel polyol prepolymer chain extender. In another aspect of the invention, the novel polyol prepolymer chain extender is reacted with a polyisocyanate to produce a novel silicone modified polyurea having improved adhesion, chemical resistance, UV stability, and decreased shrinkage properties.

Abstract:
A force characterization device utilizes a flexure having a compliant portion and a solid portion. During operation of a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) on the solid portion of the flexure, a first capacitance probe detects displacement of the solid portion of the flexure in a first dimension and a second capacitance probe detects displacement of the solid portion of the flexure in a second dimension perpendicular to the first dimension. The detected displacements in the first and second dimensions of the solid portion of the flexure are correlated to forces applied to the flexure in the first and second dimensions based on the detected displacements and the predetermined spring constant of the compliant portion of the flexure. A total applied force is determined based on the forces applied to the flexure in the first and second dimensions. The flexure may be utilized for touch-trigger operations or scanning operations of the CMM. For scanning operations, a normal force applied and a coefficient of friction between the contact probe of the CMM and the solid portion of the flexure may be determined from the total applied force and the forces applied in the first and second dimensions.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for operating a contactless and batteryless chip card. The chip card is supplied with energy via an alternating field by a write/read unit. The bidirectional data transfer is achieved by modulation of the energy-transmitting alternating field. The chip card includes, inter alia, an antenna coil for receiving the alternating field, an input circuit generating the supply voltage from the coil current, and a voltage detector for detecting blanking gaps in the alternating field. By the method in accordance with the invention the voltage detector compares the two voltages at the coil ends with one another and then supplies an output signal, provided both the voltages are substantially equal in size for longer than a predetermined period. Furthermore, a chip card is described that contains a voltage detector permitting operation according to the method described.

Abstract:
An optical instrument (10) has a drop-supporting surface for receiving a droplet (98) of liquid with a cover (16) mounted on the housing (12) which receives a light source and provides communication between the light source (114) and the inner surface of the cover. A loading aperture (24) extending through the cover permits access to the drophead when the cover is in a first rotational loading position, and the cover may be rotated to a measurement position in which the light source is positioned to illuminate the drop-supporting surface. A positioning mechanism provided between the cover an the housing engages the cover when it reaches the measurement position and thereby ensures that the light source and drop-supporting surface are maintained in fixed spaced-apart relationship.
Abstract:
A tensiographic drophead comprises a quartz body 10 having a terminal surface 18 with a peripheral drop suspension edge 20. A liquid feed bore 14 extends through the body for supplying a liquid to the terminal surface to form a drop 32 whose outer edges are suspended from the suspension edge 20. At least two light guides 26, 28 extend through the body for respectively transmitting light into and collecting light reflected internally from the drop. The light guides terminate above the plane containing the suspension edge such that the intensity of the reflected light has a significant second order reflection peak.
