    摘要: The invention provides an easy and simple method of converting the resolution of image data, which is capable of generating the high-resolution image data without incongruity, does not make a circuit in the display device complicated and does not increase the power consumption. This invention can include a portable terminal device, such as a mobile telephone or a PDA, that processes and displays image data transmitted from the outside. Image data with a plurality of grayscales can be displayed by controlling the display state of each pixel in a display unit in accordance with grayscale control pulses corresponding to the number of grayscales. For example, when a 64 grayscale display is performed, a grayscale level is defined using sixty four grayscale control pulses. Thus, it is possible to emit light from pixels in the display unit by sixty four grayscale levels. Further, the resolution converting device can generate pseudo-high-resolution image data obtained by increasing the number of pixels of original image data by n multiplication and by reducing the number of grayscales of the original image data to 1/n. When displaying the pseudo-high-resolution image data, the number of grayscale control pulses is changed to 1/n by a halftone controller. That is, in the pseudo-high-resolution image data, the number of grayscales is 1/n. Therefore, the number of grayscale control pulses used for halftone display may be 1/n in accordance with the number of grayscales. Therefore, the low-resolution image data can be displayed without incongruity by converting the resolution, also, it is possible to reduce power consumption of the display unit by the reduced amount of the number of grayscale levels pulses.

The power consumption of the display device is thus reduced. A minimum area of the entire screen of the device is used for image presentation while the remaining area is set to a display-off state (display-off mode) using the above driving method, and thus the power consumption of the display device, for example, in a standby state is reduced. Each of the display-enabled area and the display-off area is flexibly set. A combination of a multi-line driving method and the above driving method helps further reduce power consumption.

    摘要: A display device is provided having M data lines and N scanning lines arranged in a matrix and forming a plurality of display elements disposed at intersections of the M data and N scanning lines, wherein N and M are each integers greater than 1, for displaying an image. A scanning line drive circuit applies a scanning voltage signal possessing a specified selection voltage pattern simultaneously to n scanning lines from among the N scanning lines, where n is an integer greater than 1 and less than N. First and second frame memory devices accumulate display data representing the image to be displayed, such that reading the display data of a first frame period from the first frame memory device is performed substantially simultaneously with the writing of the display data of a second frame period into the second memory device. A data line drive circuit determines a data voltage signal to be applied to the M data lines in accordance with a comparison between the selection voltage pattern applied by the scanning line drive circuit and the display data read from one of the first and second memory devices. The data line drive circuit also applies the determined data voltage signal to the M data lines.
