Abstract: This invention deals with a method for deasphalting heavy oils by mixing the oil with a completely miscible solvent at a low treat ratio and then subjecting the resulting one phase mixture to a gaseous antisolvent, such as carbon dioxide, to separate the mixture into two phases. The upper phase contains the majority of the miscible solvent and the product oil containing a significantly lower CCN then did the feedstock.

Abstract: A rigid, shaped, mass support system, such as support or seating appliances for disabled or handicapped persons, is provided by charging a flexible container (2) made of elastic polymeric film with a uniform mixture of rigid particles of a mesh size relatively small compared to the size of the system and a curable adhesive polymeric binder material. The charged container (2) and its contents are molded to adapt to or fit the shape of the mass, such as the contour of that portion of the body to be supported, and evacuated to remove volatiles and fix the shape of the contents of the container. The adhesive binder is then cured to solidify the molded contents of the container to form a composite, from which the polymeric film can be stripped away, after which an adhesive paint is applied to seal and protect the surface.

Abstract: An embodiment of the invention provides a method for determining a patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy. The method collects clinical parameters from a plurality of patients to create a training database. A fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model is created using data from the training database; and, the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network is validated. Clinical parameters are collected from an individual patient; and, such clinical parameters are input into the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model via a graphical user interface. The patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy is output from the fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model and sent to the graphical user interface for use by a clinician in pre-operative planning. The fully unsupervised Bayesian Belief Network model is updated using the clinical parameters from the individual patient and the patient-specific probability of transplant glomerulopathy.

Abstract: A novel co-culture system using human brain endothelial cells (HUBEC) which promotes the expansion of human CD34+CD38− cells consistent with the PMVEC system is disclosed. HUBEC were isolated from cadaveric donors, passed in primary culture, cloned and found to be Von Willebrand Factor positive. Cultivation of purified bone marrow CD34+ cells on HUBEC monolayers supplemented with GM-CSF+IL-3+IL-6+SCF+flt-3 ligand caused a 14.5-fold increase in total cells, an 6.6-fold increase in CD34+ cells, and, most remarkably, a 440-fold increase in CD34+CD38− cells after 7 days. Further, CFU-GM production increased 15.1-fold, BFU-E increased 8-fold, and CFU-Mix increased 5.2-fold. Optimal generation was dependent upon the continued presence of exogenous supplied cytokines. In comparison, identically treated stroma-free suspension cultures supported a 10.2-fold expansion of total cells, a 3-fold increase in CD34+ cells and maintained the CD34+CD38− cell pool after 7 days of culture. Moreover, we found that non-brain human endothelial cells isolated from the same donors supported neither the expansion nor the maintenance of human CD34+CD38− cells. Although few steady state CD34+CD38− cells give rise to visible colony-forming cells in methylcellulose cultures, our FACS based cell cycle and sorting experiments demonstrated the activation of a highly clonogenic CD34+CD38− population (24% cloning efficiency) during ex-vivo culture on cytokine treated HUBEC. These results suggest that bone marrow CD34+CD38− cells require a stromal cell microenvironment for optimal expansion and that ex-vivo expanded CD34+CD38− cells generated in the HUBEC culture system appear to retain some degree of primitive “stemness”.

Abstract: A method for the recovery and recycling of sodium hydroxide from the waste solution of aluminum etching operations. The method utilizes a dialysis membrane column or stack to initially remove sodium hydroxide from the waste solution and return it to the etch tank base solution sufficiently concentrated to carry on the basic etching operation. The method permits the recovery of salable quantities of aluminum hydroxide.

Abstract: An air/water distributor underdrain assembly for providing a uniform distribution and metering of backwash air and/or water through a filter bed. The distributor assembly includes a distributor member which defines a distributor chamber for receipt of backwash air and/or water thereinto. A plurality of first and second spaced apart openings extend through the distributor member. A shroud extends downwardly into the distributor chamber from each of the first openings in fluid communication with an intermediate portion of the distributor chamber for directing backwash water therethrough. Backwash air collected in a gas compartment formed in an upper portion of the distributor chamber is directed through the second openings.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the recovery of hydrocarbon oils from other heavier oils such as vacuum residua and, more particularly, to an improved process for deasphalting petroleum oils containing those asphalts. In one aspect of the invention, the process treats a solvent which has contacted the heavy oil with a gaseous antisolvent to separate effectively and usually without distillation, the solvent from the extracted oil. The deasphalted oil product typically will have low metals contaminants and enhanced MCR. Utilities or energy requirements for the process may be improved over prior art processes.

Abstract: A combination cover plate and safety guard plate to be interfaced with a conventional electrical wall receptacle to prevent a child of tender years from gaining unauthorized access to the receptacle and sustaining serious injury from an electric shock as a consequence of an accidental contact with a current carrying wire. The cover plate is adapted to receive one or more of the electrical receptacles, so that the power can be supplied therefrom to an electrical appliance, or the like. The cover plate and safety guard plate are pivotably interconnected with one another at first ends thereof. Each of the second ends of the cover plate and safety guard plate includes respective spring-biased retaining means by which the cover and safety guard plates can be releaseably connected together. Accordingly, the safety guard plate may be rotated towards the cover plate and secured in a position across the face thereof, whereby to cover the receptacles and prevent unauthorized access thereto. The safety guard plate may be rotated away from the cover plate by exerting sufficient force against the bias of a spring, whereby to permit the disconnection of the respective retaining means. The spring is selected so that the force required to disconnect the respective retaining means is greater than that which a child of tender years is capable of exerting.
