Abstract:
An engine includes two or more serially connected air compressors coupled via a crankshaft to an expander piston and cylinder combination. An intercooler device is placed between the air compressors. Compressed air from the compressors flows through a heat exchanger where it is heated by the expander exhaust gas prior to its introduction into the expander cylinder by way of an inlet valve. Fuel is mixed with the compressed air near the inlet valve in an amount suitable to allow for combustion. An auxiliary compressor allows for the selective introduction of additional compressed air into the heat exchanger
Abstract:
One embodiment in accordance with the present invention includes implementing a personal digital assistant (PDA) with a wireless personal identification mechanism. Specifically, the wireless identification mechanism can be a radio frequency identification (RFID) integrated circuit which is incorporated on the inside of the rear housing (e.g., plastic) of the personal digital assistant. Once the radio frequency identification integrated circuit has been implemented with an authorized security code, the personal digital assistant in accordance with the present embodiment is capable of functioning as a “key” enabling entry into restricted areas which are secured with non-contact radio frequency security systems such as corporate campuses, buildings, and/or laboratories. In this manner, an authorized person does not have to carry around a separate radio frequency keycard in order to gain access to restricted areas.
Abstract:
A system allows a remote asset, via an Intelligent Device and interconnected Central Data Server to autonomously, and continuously monitor and update its status on various parameters; and from these, to calculate an overall asset state that may be caused by various combinations of the parameters.
Abstract:
Described herein is a method and apparatus for collecting and separating whole blood into its components, including collecting an amount of plasma and red blood cells. The collection and separation system includes a console and a disposable set. The method may include processing the blood through the centrifuge, collecting plasma, collecting red blood cells and returning red blood cells until a desired plasma volume is reached. Then a final volume of red blood cells and plasma may be collected. The disposable set may include a manifold, a CFC, and various components attached by tubing. These components may include one or more solution bags, blood product bags, bacterial filters, leukofilters, and a donor blood collection tube with access needle.
Abstract:
A freight management arrangement includes a monitor system that communicates over wireless with a large number of freight assets by land and with smaller number of users each associated with a fleet of the freight assets. The monitor system polls sensed ambient data in the freight assets on the basis of requests from the users. The requests may be stored as data in the monitor system or occur on a real-time basis.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method thereof wherein a portable computer system or personal digital assistant generates a visual signal in response to an occurrence of a programmed event. For example, the portable computer system can use a light emitting diode to visually signal an alarm at a specified time. The visual signal can be varied in order to indicate the type of event associated with the alarm. In one implementation, the visual signal blinks at a particular rate depending on the type of event. In another implementation, the visual signal blinks a prescribed number of times or according to a particular pattern depending on the type of event. When enabled, the visual signal is generated in lieu of an audible signal, thus providing to the user a silent alarm that does not disturb other people in proximity, such as in a meeting, a theater, or some other gathering.
Abstract:
There is described a fishing line release apparatus (1) for use when casting a fishing line (13) with a fishing rod (4), and in particular for automatically releasing the fishing line (4) when casting. The fishing line release apparatus (1) comprises a body member (2) having a mounting means for mounting the apparatus (1) relative to a fishing rod (4); inclination sensing means (10) mounted relative to the body member (2) for sensing an inclination of the fishing rod (4), and release means (12) for releasably retaining, relative to the fishing rod (4), the fishing line (13) to be cast by the fishing rod (4), the arrangement and construction being such that the release means (12) is operated to release the fishing line (13) retained thereby when the inclination sensing means (10) senses a predetermined inclination of the fishing rod (4).
Abstract:
A method and an apparatus for transmitting and receiving electromagnetically generated ultra-sound, particularly for non-destructive testing of electrically conductive material, comprising the steps of generating one or more magnetic fields by means of one or more electromagnets (1,2,3,4) and supplying to a transmitter coil (8) in said magnetic field a supersonic frequency, and scanning a receiver coil (52) in said magnetic field. For known apparatuses the signal/noise ratio of a received signal is unfavorable, especially at the testing of non-magnetic material.According to the present invention said ratio is improved in that said magnetic field is generated during a short time compared with the time between two subsequently occurring magnetic fields, and a pulse well-defined in length of supersonic frequency is supplied to the transmitter coil (8) about or at the maximum strength of the magnetic field or fields. The receiver coil (52) thereafter is scanned, but also about or at the maximum strength of the magnetic field or fields. The said pulse has a preferred length of one or two complete sinusoidally-shaped cycles, whereafter the signal is cancelled entirely.According to a preferred embodiment the said pulse is generated through a thyristor-controlled (42) discharge circuit comprising a capacitor (38) and a vacuum gap tube (37). According to a preferred embodiment there is further provided a high-pass filter (53) between the receiver coil (52) and an amplifier (54).
Abstract:
A method and system for enabling personal digital assistants (PDAs) and protecting stored private data. Specifically, one embodiment in accordance with the present invention includes a removable expansion card about the size of a postage stamp which plugs into a slot of a personal digital assistant. The removable expansion card, referred to as a personality card, is capable of storing all of a user's private information and data which is used within their personal digital assistant. By removing the personality card from the personal digital assistant, all of the user's private information and data may be removed from the personal digital assistant. Furthermore, the personal digital assistant may also be rendered totally or partially useless once the personality card is removed from it. There are several advantages associated with a personality card system in accordance with the present invention. For example, one of the advantages is that a user is able to restrict access to their stored private information and data by simply removing their personality card from their personal digital assistant. Furthermore, as personal digital assistants equipped with personality card slots become increasingly more common, a user will be able to continually carry around their personality card and enable a spare and locally available personal digital assistant with their private information when desired.
