An feeding tube and a kit for installation of a feeding tube includes a balloon anchored gastric tube. A protective sleeve on a dilator protects the toroidal balloon from damage during surgical insertion of the feeding tube. In one example, a jejunal tube is integrated with the kit and the gastric tube serves as a gastric sleeve forming an annular region or channels for fluid flow to and/or from the stomach and to/from the jejunum. An integrated gastro jejunal feeding tube unit may include a jejunal tube outlet port at one end, a jejunal balloon port, a gastric sleeve outlet port, one or more gastric balloon ports, one or more gastric balloons, gastric drainage holes, a jejunal balloon positioned at end of the jejunal tube and sleeve. A black silk loop may affix an end of the jejunal tube at a position in the jejunum, and insertion of the jejunal tube may be monitored continuously using an endoscope. Drainage holes may be provided in the jejunal tube and/or the gastric sleeve. Depending on the clinical state, feeding may be initiated through the gastric sleeve outlet port or via the jejunal tube outlet port and may be altered without surgical intervention, as required. Drainage holes in the gastric sleeve may be used to deflate the stomach, while nutrition is provided by a jejunal tube inserted in the jejunum, simultaneously.

An enteral feeding unit or system that minimizes the occurrence of gastro-esophogeal-pharynegal reflux during feeding is described. The enteral feeding unit or device includes an automatable feeding pump with a feedback sensor for sensing a relative pressure in a patient's stomach and esophagus, and a regulator system for controlling or monitoring feeding rate to said patient as a function of said relative gastro-esophageal pressure. The system includes a stomach probe that has a fluid-tight closure of the esophagus. The stomach probe, according to the invention, is characterized by a tampon-bladder for watertight closure of the esophagus, in which the tampon-bladder forms from flexible and/or elastic material at least a closed inner cavity for the reception of a fluid medium, through a means (11) of establishing a prescribed pressure for the medium in the tampon-bladder (16) by an inner lumen forming the actual stomach probe, from which an outer hose-like lumen (18) extending to the tampon-bladder (16) is so arranged that between the outer lumen (18) and the inner lumen (17) a channel is formed connected to the inner cavity of the tampon-bladder (16) arranged on the outer lumen (18) by a number of openings (20), whereby the inner cavity of the tampon-bladder (16) is connected via the canal formed between the inner and outer lumina (17, 18) with the means of production of pressure in the tampon-bladder, that is, with a suitably graded reservoir or equalizing vessel (11) for the liquid medium situated above the tampon-bladder and outside the patient.

There are two further openings in another proximal port with a connector, to which a source/sink of gas pressure and a pressure gauge can be connected. The interior of a distal balloon communicates with the opening and can hence be inflated and deflated through that opening in order to measure intra-abdominal pressure using the pressure gauge. A reflux filter is integrated into the connector. In the upper connector piece or lower connector piece a recess surrounding the measurement lumen is provided at the contact surface between the connector pieces. The gas-permeable filter membrane is disposed in the recess for preventing liquids in the lumen from entering from the lower connector piece into the upper connector piece and thus from passing through the opening in case of rupture or leakage of the distal balloon.

In accordance with a preferred embodiment of this invention, there is provided a new and improved method of forming a four-lumen gastrointestinal tube. This tube may be characterized as having two lumens which extend nearly the full length of the tube and two lumens which extend through only a portion of the tube. The subject method comprises the steps of: (1) extruding a three-lumen sleeve portion wherein one of the lumens is an insert carrying lumen and the remaining two lumens, in the final gastrointestinal tube assembly, are those lumens which extend the full length of the tube; (2) extruding a two-lumen insert portion, the lumens of which in the final gastrointestinal tube assembly, extend the full length of the assembly, and wherein the external dimensions of the insert portion are slightly larger than the internal dimensions of the insert carrying lumen of the sleeve portion; (3) immersing the sleeve portion in a solvent, preferably chlorothene, to cause it to swell until the internal dimensions of the insert carrying lumen are slightly larger than the external dimensions of the two-lumen insert portion; (4) inserting the insert portion into the insert carrying lumen; and (5) removing the solvent and thereby causing the insert carrying lumen in the sleeve portion to contract around the insert portion forming a "solvent shrink fit."
