摘要: The present invention generally provides for a method of treating metabolic disorder by severing a bile duct from fluid communication with an intestine at a first target site adjacent the Oddi sphincter, thereby creating a severed bile duct. The method further involves re-establishing fluid communication of the severed bile duct with the intestine by attaching a distal end of the severed bile duct to a second target site along the intestine, wherein said second target site is distal to the first target site.

摘要: Balloon tamponade devices for treating bleeding sites within the upper digestive tract (e.g. esophageal or upper gastric bleeding sites, or duodenal, pyloric or distal gastric bleeding sites) comprise a tube having proximal and distal open ends and at least one inflatable balloon mounted over the tube. Preferably, two balloons are mounted over the tube, and inflation lumens are provided for each. A bridle is attached to the tube, and is adapted to extend up the esophagus to allow the device to be secured in place having the proximal open end of the tube positioned within the digestive tract to allow for normal feeding and swallowing functions. A method for placing a balloon tamponade device as generally described above is also described. The device is backloaded onto an endoscope by passing the endoscope through the open ends of the tube. The endoscope is then passed through the mouth and down the esophagus and used to examine the esophagus and/or other portions of the digestive tract to determine whether or not treatment is required. If treatment is required, the device is advanced along the endoscope and down the esophagus, and the balloon(s) of the device is (are) positioned and inflated to treat the bleeding sites. The endoscope is used to check positioning and then withdrawn. Thereafter, the bridal can be positioned through the nose and connected to a traction device. Methods for delivering detachable coatings to bleeding sites for treatment thereof are also described.

摘要: The device, that can be implanted in the intestinal cavity, comprises a reactor comprising a semi-permeable or porous membrane or coating linked to a element for attachment to an intestinal or gastric wall. The reactor can be in the form of a ribbon, a structure having more than two faces or an open structure delimiting a lumen, comprising, or formed from, a semi-permeable or porous membrane. The reactor can also delimit, at least partially with the semi-permeable or porous membrane of same, a closed inner space. The reactor can comprise or carry enzymes or micro-organisms, in particular bacteria or yeast. The reactor is used for generating a chemical reaction with one or more molecules present in the intestine, or for producing one or more biologically active molecules. It can, in particular, be used for consuming sugars, disaccharides and simple sugars or producing essential amino acids or other molecules having a positive effect on the health.

摘要: An intraluminal sleeve system is provided, which generally includes an intraluminal sleeve capable of dispensing an active agent to a patient, for example, a metabolic agent or satiety inducing agent. The intraluminal sleeve may be structured to contain the active agent and permit controlled release of the active agent to the patient while the intraluminal sleeve is positioned within the patient's intestine. Methods for treating obesity are also provided which include positioning an intraluminal sleeve in a patient's intestine, the intraluminal sleeve being capable of dispensing an active agent to the patient. In one embodiment, the active agent may be contained in a reservoir and dispensed to a portion of the patient's body.
