    Abstract: A nozzle, for use in a gas-operated spraying apparatus such as an airbrush, is disclosed. The nozzle locates concentrically within an air cap in the gas outlet of a spraying apparatus and cooperates with a tapered needle located in an axial passage thereof to seal the outlet of the nozzle. The needle is retractable in the nozzle to dispense a medium such as paint to be sprayed.

    Abstract: An electrostatic spray head is charged with high voltage from a high voltage source. As a liquid to be sprayed is supplied to the spray head, the liquid is atomized predominately due to the high voltage. The spray head is located within or closely adjacent to a gas stream flowing along a path which extends in the spraying direction, so that at least some of the atomized liquid becomes entrained in the gas stream. The gas stream has a lower velocity region and a high velocity region, of which the lower velocity region is transversally closer to the spray head.

    Abstract: Liquid fuel, particularly slurry-type fuel, such as coal-water, slurry or coal-oil slurries, is atomized by bringing the fuel into contact with gas under pressure in an atomizing nozzle (1). To this end, a continuous stream of fuel is passed through a channel (17) of circular cross-section. The stream of fuel is accelerated in the channel, adjacent the outlet end of the nozzle, and is preliminarily disintegrated by means of at least one first stream of gas under pressure directed inwardly against the outside of the fuel stream. The fuel is finally atomized by directing at least one second stream of gas under pressure outwardly against the inside of the accelerated and preliminarily disintegrated fuel stream, substantially immediately after said stream exits from the nozzle.

    Abstract: An air atomizing nozzle assembly for spray coating systems such as an electrostatic spray gun is disclosed. The nozzle assembly includes an air cap having a central bore which surrounds a fluid tip nozzle. The bore has a plurality of uniformly dimensioned axially aligned gas flow passages evenly spaced about its circumference and a plurality of radially inwardly extending ribs therebetween. The ribs engage the outside surface of the fluid tip nozzle to positively align its center axis on the axis of the central bore. The air cap and nozzle tip thus cooperate to form a plurality of uniform gas flow passages around the nozzle thereby producing a finely atomized uniform spray pattern of coating material emitted from the fluid tip. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the gas flow passages and ribs are formed in a metal element inserted in a center bore in the air cap. The metal element is so dimensioned that the ribs make a press fit with the fluid tip to positively align it. The air cap is retained in a one-piece resilient retaining ring by snapping the air cap into position over an annular lip of the ring. The air cap and retaining ring form a seal which prevents control air from escaping to the atmosphere.

    Abstract: An improved electrostatic spray gun is disclosed including an electrically conductive metal handle assembly, an electrically insulative barrel assembly, and an electrically insulative nozzle assembly terminating at its forward end in a small diameter discharge orifice through which the coating material is ejected. An ionizing electrode protrudes from the discharge orifice. The flow of material through the barrel and the nozzle assembly is controlled by a trigger actuated needle and seat valve assembly close to the discharge orifice and in axial alignment with an annular fluid flow passageway in the barrel portion of the gun. A high value resistor is disposed in the barrel portion of the gun and a second lower value resistor is disposed inside the needle valve immediately upstream of the ionizing electrode. The elements of the improved electrostatic spray gun cooperate to provide clean and safe operation.

    Abstract: The disclosure concerns an atomizer head used for atomizing wet lacquer, or the like. The atomizer head has an air conduit communicating with an air outlet part and has a liquid conduit communicating with a liquid outlet part. The air outlet part is radially outside the liquid outlet part. There is an inner part of the atomizer head which adjoins the outlet end of the liquid conduit. The inner part has an outside which is preferably trumpet shaped. The liquid conduit outlet end communicates with the outside of the inner part through obliquely extending ducts. There is an intermediate part that is outside the outlet end of the liquid conduit and outside the inner part. A cap is positioned outside the intermediate part. The air conduit is in part defined between the intermediate part and the cap. The intermediate part has a peripheral flange which is engaged by the interior of the cap. The flange has grooves extending along it for passage of air. The flange is in the air conduit. The flange tapers narrower toward the air outlet part. The grooves may be longitudinally extending along the flange or may be helically wound about the flange. A cap nut holds the cap to the atomizer head.
